Are there any 100% or near 100% distance programs at the B.S or B.A. level that would lead to certification as an elementary gen. ed. or special ed. teacher?
    What about the big three?

There are at least a few around. The main stumbling block (in my mind at least) is that you still have to do that student teaching internship in order to get your teaching certificate. The rules related to this vary from state to state and many states have what is usually termed an "alternate route to certification." You might want to check that out first because it can potentially be faster (for some) than going the DL route.

Take the suggested route and check local institutions

Each state has specific requirements, and although some state have reciprosity, it would be to your advantage to do it locally.

I got a Master's degree and general certification plus student teaching in a year and a half at National Louis in Chicago. While you can do some of the classes on line, doing it locally has other advantages as well.

Each school of edu probably had local contacts in terms of placement. Once you graduate those contacts will be valuable in terms of getting placed.

Rio Salado College in Arizona offers what I believe was the first online teacher credentialing program. The problem in the past has been the student teaching component. RSC has said that they will work with you and your local district to create a student teaching situation in your state. Now, your state does have to have licensing reciprocity with Arizona (and there are about 20 states that do so).

National University in California offers the credential program online with the exception of the student teaching courses. If you're in California, they're a possibility. I don't know how well they work with other states.

    Hey Rob,

I am a High school Coach and have studied this topic for a while. I am working on my degree, but I do not plan on getting certified to teach. I do know that Western Governors University has the complete teacher certification program from start to a B.A. degree online. You will have to do a teacher demo for a semester through them.

    Good Luck

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm not seeking the info. for myself but for my wife who has 40 or 50 hours of credits from three different schools. She's not sure at this point that she wants to go into teaching but is checking into her options. Once again, thanks for the advice.

    Regent U.

Pat Robertson's Regent U. has a DL BA or BS program for teacher certification, there may be a 2 week internship (honestly I don't remember)

Regent U is accredited, but expensive. It has the best rep of the 'christian' colleges.

They have a campus in Alexandria VA - the big B&M campus is downstate near Hampton Roads.

    Very legitimate university.
