Does anyone have information regarding Southwest University. I know they are DETC accredited. I am looking into completing a criminal justice degree as quickly and inexpensive as possible. I currently have an A.S. degree, however, for promotional opportunities in the near future, I need a nationally or regionally accredited degree. Southwest University's program seems very doable and reasonably priced. I would appreciate any info regarding this school or any other that fits my criteria.

    Thanks,

    Manny

I've been writing about them in a positive vein for 20+ years, ever since Reg Sheldrick sold Newport University and started Southwest, in Arizona. It was one of the better unaccredited schools . . . one of the few that never, to my knowledge, made or even hinted at false accreditation claims. I was pleased when they got DETC accreditation. Sheldrick is getting on in years (as are we all), and not in the best of health, and I had concerns about the schools survival after him. But with recognized accreditation, it has real value in the marketplace and surely can be sold if need be. The main caution, as has been mentioned here many times, is that DETC-accredited schools have much lower acceptance in the academic world than regionally-accredited -- roughly 20% of RA schools always accept them, and another 20% usually -- which means 60% seldom or never. Much higher acceptance, it seems safe to say, in the business world.

The most recent DETC newsletter had the news that Dr. Sheldrick died in September at the age of 73.

Thank you for this sad news, David. Although we spoke by phone a few times a year, for 20 years, I only met him in person once, at his home in New Orleans, where it was so sad to see the trouble he had, emphysema I think, climbing the stairs.

I liked him a lot. When I sold my book copyrights to Pearson in 1998, and wasn't sure if I was retired or not, he sent me an incredibly ugly garish imitation gold watch, with a note that said, "Retire, kid. You've earned it."

Do we know what has become, or will become, of the school? His partner, Grayce Lee, was not in good health either, I believe.

Hi John - Grayce is doing well and the school is in good shape. She isn't planning on doing anything for awhile. She is in much better health than Reg was.

I know very little about Southwest or the late Mr Sheldrick. What I do know is that this thread shows the intelligence and moral decency that make degreeinfo both worthwhile and indispensable. Thank you.

Cehi: I totally agree with you, Uncle Janko.
