I will start off telling you that Touro is regionally accredited.

Now that that is out of the way, I highly recommend that you run a search on this site for this school. You will locate so many threads from the search that you should be busy reading them for a day or three...

After you have read these threads then return to the board to ask more specific questions...

There are many people on this board who will be able to address your concerns... but we need more to work with than "does anybody know anything about..." especially when dealing with high profile schools that are frequently discussed and debated...

    Respectfully,

    TOURO UNIVERSITY

campared to other online school, how would you rate this school. Do you think I'm making the right choice with Touro. I've taken in consideration, both, their program, as well as their tuition program with the military. In other words, I dont pay anything for attending this university.

    Touro

I attended Touro College back in the early 80's . I went to the brick and mortar school in Midtown Manhatten at the time it was considerea cheaper alternative to Yeshiva University I went to work for Orthodox Jews on 47th st 3 blocks away from the campus the woman interviewing me asked me where I went to school when I answered "Touro College " she seriously asked me
"Where is that?" Twenty years later it doesn't really matter and the school has developed a good reputation helped in part by having a graduate who had a super score on the NYCPA exam.
( I dont remember the exact article it was in the alumnus magazine which I usually used for bathroom reading approx 87)

    Re: TOURO UNIVERSITY

Being military, you can't beat the price. Any degree earned from there will "fill the square" for promotion boards - officer or enlisted (as long as TUI is properly accredited). If that alone is your motivation, it sounds like a great deal to me.

If you want to do something outside of the military with the degree (meaning attract positive attention to yourself) you need to weigh any special occupational considerations. For many occupations just having a legitimate degree is worthwhile. In others it depends on where the degree is from and or what you studied, or what you wrote your thesis or dissertation on. Regional considerations are also important... If you're going to retire in Texas they're likely to raise an eyebrow due to no name recognition... (I can hear it now to the tune of the old salsa TV commercial... New York City?? and California??...)

So now that I really haven't answered your question (I only really gave you food for thought)... all I can do now is to let you know that I looked them over... asked a few questions to staff and faculty... talked to a few current students... asked for some specific information about specific courses (did not get satisfactory answers on this one)... and elected not to seek a degree through TUI (even before my military retirement)...

It was a difficult decision... the tuition break was very attractive... but they were very new... very inexperienced... the curriculum was not exactly what I was looking for... and I had deep concerns about the coursework... especially after not getting satisfactory answers from the staff and faculty... and I really hated the "International" part of the institution's name.

Take my advice with a grain of salt... There are people who monitor this board who may be able to help you with more direct advice... tell us what degree program you are looking for... let us know what you want to do with this degree...

    Respectfully,

I have been with Touro since 1999. Completed my MBA and Ph.D. The school came a long way and developed to become an excellent educational institution with top faculty.

Feel free to send your questions to my private email on this board and I will do my best to respond to it.

Per the previous advice, we really need to know just a
bit more as to your expectations ...

From my view as a TUI MBA graduate and a current
PhD student, I have no issues with the school or
staff. Compared to other schools, TUI is still a new
player, and has proved able to overcome any of the
typical 'growing pains' of such organizations.

PM me for any specifics, and a search of the past postings
may serve to answer your specific questions.

Would I consider the same academic path again?

Yes, without a doubt! The corporate position I hold
today is directly related to having completed my MBA
from TUI. For others, certainly the value might vary.

    BruceP-

I see from your signature that you have an MPA from Golden Gate University.

I have a few quesitons regarding this type of degree.

First of all....what job does this qualify you for, and if you don't mind me asking....what job do you have now?

Second, is Golden Gate University a good school and did you enjoy the program?

I know this questions are broad, but I would apperciate it if you could give me some insight

    Thanks

Anybody have any updates on their issues on their accreditation status. Any student going into the program should know of the issues currently with their accreditation transfer..........

My understanding is that there are no "issues" and that everything is on track.

    I got my MBA there....

It is regionally accredited and it the tuition break I got for being retired military made it the cheapest way to go for me. I needed an accredited school to check a block at my government job and it did that. It allowed me to teach as an adjunct at a local college and qualified me for my doctoral program. They do provide excellent service.

However, if you are looking to use this post military I would look elsewhere. There are some good programs which are AACSB accredited and cater fairly well to the military. One I have seen is University of Nebraska - Lincoln and it is not much more expensive than Touro (about $10K I believe). When it comes to reputation you get what you pay for and no one will ever say "what? University of Nebraska, where's that?". Also, there are some questions about their accreditation and regardless of how well things are going with their transfer to WACS I would never enroll in a school with any questions as to their future accreditation.

PS, I hate the International part of the name too. Sounds way cheesey.

Re: I got my MBA there....

Here's a different story... As a current Ph.D. student, I was told in no uncertain terms that the transfer to WACS was a forgone conclusion at this point, and that TUI's regional accreditation never was in jeopardy, nor is it in the future. Moreover, there has been serious dialogue about AACSB accreditation in the near future.

Re: Re: I got my MBA there....

I was told this "informally" by this board when I was looking for a doctorate, then they went on RA probation. I don't think there is even a chance of them obtaining it, based on their model. Not to say it is a bad thing, but without the connection to TU, they couldn't get the full time faculty percentage they need to even start the process (right or wrong). Everybody has different needs, and it is OK to say TUI is RA and a strong school in the RA arena, but to say they are going AACSB in the near future is misleading at best.

I have contacted TUI about it (back when I was looking) and AACSB, they both said it is not in discussion, nor could it be a reality if discussions began for at least 4-5 years. They are not members, which is the first step. TUI said they are concentrating their efforts on getting their own RA status first, and they do not have an interest in AACSB at this time. If they did, they would need to limit their enrollment, and I believe they are trying to grow their base, not limit it.

I am glad to hear they are OK with RA. I think it is a good step for DL to have TUI on their own accreditation status, as well as with the most difficult (from what I have heard) in the Western States, but let us not get carried away, unless their is some factual information to back this up (And if there is, please post it!!!) ;)

There is no such thing as a sure thing

There is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to accreditation. If it was in writing from the board at WACS that might be close. But it is not so it isn't a sure thing. To recommend to someone to enroll in a school with any ongoing discussion concerning its accreditation would be unwise.

Re: There is no such thing as a sure thing

DTechBA... here is something in writing for you.

Randy Miller posted this thread sometime ago.. It is self explanatory.. TUI will make the *transfer of accreditation* for sure...

"I received the following e-mail from WASC:

"We are in contact with Touro College, the parent of TUI, and are well aware of the situation. Our executive director will be meeting with the leaders of Touro College and the Middle States Association to work out a transition later this month.

While it is true that accreditation takes a number of years, this applies for new institutions. TUI has been in operation for a number of years and already is accredited by the Middle States Association. It was recently visited and evaluated by a team with both Middle States and WASC representatives, so we are familiar with its operations. It thus will not be treated as a new institution but as an already accredited institution. The process to obtain WASC accreditation will therefore not take multiple years but should take less than a year once Touro College has initiated the process. The meeting with Touro College later this month is intended to set into motion the process for that."

I hope this responds to your inquiry.

    Sincerely,

    Barbara Nagai

Are you suggesting that any RA school could lose accreditation? If so, that seems like a naive point of view, IMHO.

The M.P.A. is a graduate degree in public management... roughly the little brother to the business-oriented M.B.A. (the M.B.A. is more popular and has more utility).

The M.P.A. is usually more of a degree for someone who is already employed in the public sector looking for promotion... it's hard to enter into the public sector at a supervisory or analyst level with the M.P.A. unless you know somebody or get lucky (most civil service rules limit who can apply for promotional jobs - although the federal government is not as tight on this as the states, counties, municipalities and other agencies).

What I'm doing today. I retired from the military last year. I considered my options regarding employment and decided that I didn't want to relocate to pursue a contractor or federal government job... so I re-evaluated my future and decided to go into education (allowing me to place a priority on family and take vacations with my wife, a school teacher)... after careful consideration I began studying to become a school pyschologist... which basically means that I "walked away from" my M.P.A. education to pursue other interests...

GGU is an "OK" school... As I recall from various published ratings GGU did make the lists... but they didn't do all that great. I did enjoy the program... I found good instructors who challenged me and I took as many courses as I could from them... and I avoided the lame instructors who were too easy (in my opinion).

Hopefully this helps answer your question.

PS: Further discussion on this subject should probably become it's own topic (so we don't "hijack" this topic)!

I asked this exact question about a year ago, and several examples were given of school's who did lose their RA status.
