Just got word today that the final project report for my MSc in epidemiology was accepted!

Now, I can start looking out for good airfares to London this March, to attend the graduation ceremony.

WOW! Maybe one of these days I'll be looking for air fares too, but right now it seems like a LONG way off.

My deepest and most sincere congratulations to you! One of the courses I took for my M.S. in Community Health was epidemiology and it was my hardest of the 10 courses I took.

To actually have a degree in this subject is commendable!

    Congratulations!

    Good for you, Alex!
If you don't mind me asking, what are your "parting thoughts" on the MSc in epidemiology from U of L? Would you recommend this program to others? Was it as difficult or time-consuming as you imagined? What advice would you give to someone who was considering this program? What are you planning on doing with this degree?
Sorry for the barrage of questions! I know you just FINISHED writing a project report, LOL!
    Thank you in advance,
    Marjie

    Congradulations!

    If you don't mind...I have a question....

Are all U of L ext. programmes have graduation ceremony at March?

How is the graduation ceremony is like? will people wearing growns or hoods?

Also, will there be any activities in the corresponding lead college?

    Re: Congratulations!

Thanks to everyone for their kind words!

    Thoughts on the MSc--

Yes, I would most definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a graduate epidemiology program who needs the convenience of distance learning. The academics are very solid, and the course materials are very well-prepared. I would particularly recommend the classes that use computer-aided learning (CDs). The web board, while not required, was an excellent resource for interacting with fellow students. The difficulty and time commitment was what one would expect from any high-quality graduate program in the field- and I have taken graduate courses from four other institutions, so I have some basis for comparison!

To someone starting in the program, I would advise him or her to keep up with the work as you go along, because it is very difficult to let everything pile up until the end. I would also advise regular participation in the online discussions on the web board. Also, I would warn that it really is an epidemiology program- the University of London offers other health programs (including infectious diseases; health administration), and a number of schools offer more general Master of Public Health programs. Choose this MSc program if your main interest is epidemiology.

I am hoping that this degree will allow me to advance in my current job as an epidemiologist with my state health department. The degree already helped me get the job, towards the end of my first year in the program.

I haven't yet received official details about the graduation ceremony, but my understanding is that the March ceremony is for ALL U of L extermal programmes. From the graduation photos Oxpecker posted, it looks like people wear gowns and sometimes hoods, but I'm not sure how the academic garb designs vary according to degree. I think I read somewhere that you can wear academic garb from a previous degree, but I don't think I'll do that. For a while, they had posted a video link to the 2004 graduation ceremony, but it seems like that link is no longer present. I had watched part of the video, and it looks as regal and formal as any graduation ceremony I have attended. The Princess Royal (aka Princess Anne, daughter of the Queen) was the leader of the ceremonies.

I'm not yet sure whether there is any particular event hosted by the lead college, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It would be very nice to meet some of the tutors and staff who work with the program.

Even if there isn't anything official, it wouldn't be too difficult to pop round to say hello and thanks if you've emailed the prof in advance . . . LSHTM is all of, oooh, twenty, maybe thirty yards away from the gates of Senate House.

Oh, and jolly well done! I'm doing a resident part-time MA at Birkbeck at the moment, and that kind of workload in the sciences by DL must have been a killer.

What MA, Angela? My brother did a part-time MA in History on campus at Birkbeck, and I did the MSc in Structural Biology.

Thinking about London external programmes in the sciences: I note that Imperial's DL MSc in Human Molecular Genetics, which was to have been offered through the external programme starting next year, has been dropped. Does anyone know what happened there?
