I am looking for some tips or advice for taking the dantes environ and human test. I have studied the nln passboooks found at passbooks.com. I took the natural science clep and did not study and missed passing by three points. i dont want to make the same mistake twice so I have been studying very hard for the dantes. Has anyone taken this test and what is there reaction to the test?

I assume you mean "Environment & Humanity: The Race to Save the Planet Earth" test. I did not find it an easy one (although I did well and got an A for it from COSC) but Dantes sometimes requires as a few as 40% right to get a passing score.

I bought old editions of the Race to Save the Planet book and study guide (two separate books) for about $8 each (used) on Amazon.com. They are also available at a lot of public libraries. I also checked out the the Barron's guide to the AP Environmental Science test, which tracked fairly closely to the other texts, but was more academic and therefore harder to digest quickly.

The test is based on a public TV telecourse that is no longer in much use. However, the are numerous posts here over the past three years on this and other Dantes tests. Just do a search on "environment and Dantes" and you should find a lot more info.

One tip for the test: the series and texts are kind of environmentally PC (I say this as an environmentalist). The test was not: some of the PC answers were the wrong ones.

    re

I would recomend watching the video series of the same title before taking the test. The videos lay a good foundation of what is happening to the environment if you have been living in cave or georgia for the last 15 years

I'm taking the test sometime this month. I'm going to rent the series on VHS from the local library who put it on reserve for me. It was made in 1990 and I dont think it's sold anymore...

I took the sample test before I started studying and got 7 out of 12 right.

What I'd like to know is what topics I should focus on the most. My search engine wont pull up the old threads anymore.

I'm SURE this test is not EASY, however from what I hear on here this seems to be the LEAST DIFFICULT science elective. (Since Heres to your health doesnt count as a science elective)

the videos are very good for studying. I passed and I studied the videos and also used the pass book question and answer guide from www.passbooks.com

Thanks, however something is strange with that pass-books site, I noticed they had Zillions of DANTES passbooks for different subjects where I never knew a DSST test existed. CLIMATOLOGY/METEOROLOGY for example and many more. Is this an old site?

I think they just have alot of books! The test haS many questions on world population , soil errosion, pollution impact. Watch the videos they are a huge tutor!

Probably a silly question, but can anyone take a DANTES/DSST test or is it only for active military?

YES anyone can take it. However it is free for military people. Civilians have to pay about 60-80 dollars. (Not bad considering it can be a quick 3 credits and still cheaper than a community college course)

The disadvantage is that DANTES/DSST... testing centers are hard to find and scheduling exams can be elusive... It depends on where you live.

Back to the Environment test, How difficult is it compared to the other exams??? I know that's a relative question, but it's always nice to have perspective.:)

I found it harder when comparing it to other tests that I did NOT study for.

the dsst environ and human was easier than taking the clep earht sciences test. I passed in the high 70s and could have done better if I studied harderr read the books and watch the videos and you will do fine !

Hmmm I did not know CLEP had an earth science test...
It must have been discontinued a long time ago.

My only guess with this test is that of ALL the potential standardized tests I can possibly take to fulfill my "one more" natural science elective (CLEP/DANTES...) This one I think has the 3rd highest pass rate. (Intro to Computing the sample test looks scarey) (CLEP natural science may duplicate my 3 credits in Biology or Chemistry or maybe both)

I'm not sure what to make of the military pass rates though, but I think I only need a 46 to pass anyway...?

the clep test was very difficult and I missedpassing by 3 points and was pissed. The test was mostly on chemistry and biology and the test book from clep was not very good and was actually no help in the long run!

    lol...

That CLEP guide was no help for my General Math exam and I missed by 2 points (and ran out of time). The sample test was not even close. I would trust an independent source BEFORE id trust a straight from the horses mouth guide. (anything saying OFFICIAL)

A word on pass rates- for what it's worth, the pass rate is 60% for the environment test despite its reputation for being extremely rigorous!

Conversely- the pass rate for Criminal Justice is 51% 9 points lower and it has a rep for being somewhat easy...

Intro to Computing has the highest DSST pass rate at 84% or ties for the highest and yet the sample test looks horrendous...

I guess a lot of it just depends on the individual and their personal background...

I just finished watching all 10 videos. Theyre not hard to understand, but they dont get into too much detail about academics...

I did some web searches and found some notes on 5 of the 10 videos from a Johnson and Wales professor...

    http://mmcconeghy.com/students/videonotes.html

I guess he only showed 5 videos to his class but its still better than nothing. I posted this in case someone else on here could use it someday.

Anyone remember how LONG this test is btw?

I'm taking it Saturday weather permitting (along with Criminal Justice and Intro to Law Enforcement on the same day. ) I'm hoping the videos help...They were interesting...DEFINATELY opinionated and politically correct...lol, but as long as I get my 3 credits I don't care what the slant is.

I saved this environment test for last (If I pass all three of these tests I graduate) since I figured it would be the toughest by far...

YES - I took the exam. But I did not find it particullarly difficult. There will be questions on energy use, resources, population: know how to calculate doubling times.

It's too late to help youi tomorrow, but I must add this for others: in addition to the TV series, DO GET the study guide!

It's independent of the textbooks one can use but well tied to comprehension of all the basics you need, including multiple choice questions on each individual program.

Another help? The AP in Environmental Science is somewhat new, and there is a Barron's guide. But at 600 pages, overkill! Much more concise is this
    http://www.awesomeguides.com/ap_environmental_science_teacher_resource.htm
A.P. Environmental Science Student Study Guide
It covers all the esstentials in 20% of the length!
(I bought it and used it; in fact I used it and perused a textbook instead of viewing the TV series.)

    Good luck!
