I attended a local university for 1 1/2 yrs and had to leave for financial reasons. Although I would love to attend an on-campus college, my work schedule does not even allow for a part-time schedule. I am looking for an affordable DL program in which I can earn a Degree in accounting (preferable a BA). I started out looking at Harcourt Learning which led me to California College. I happened upon this website and I'm now terrified of ending up in a "degree mill" or unaccredited school where credits don't transfer. I'm now overwhelmed. Please Help!

    Howdy!

Here are a few regionally accredited schools that accept an unlimited number of transfer credits (from other regionally accredited schools, of course), that can cost less than $2,500, and that require no residency: Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, and Thomas Edison State College.

    Good luck!

    Kim:

Welcome to the forum! No need to be terrified about ending up in a degree mill. This will not happen if you do your research before enrolling in any program. Several suggestions which might help:

    1. Always check for proper accreditation, either regional accreditation, professional accreditation or GAAP, and refuse to settle for anything less. While there may be a few (very few) schools which offer substantive programs and are not accredited, proper accreditation cannot be overemphasized. All of this is explained at the website www.degree.net and then click on accreditation.

    2. Purchase "Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning," which is a valuable tool for the distance learner.

    3. Programs which sound too good to be true, usually are!

    4. Be patient, do the research, ask questions on this forum (as well as several others), and you will find a program that is right for you.

    Kim,

You might want to check Touro's undergraduate programs...see if there is something there that fits your needs.

    100% nonresidential and RA.

  5. Kim,

Several schools offer undergraduate degrees in accounting and other business fields -- see http://distancelearn.about.com/cs/accounting1/

Harcourt and California College for Health Sciences are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). DETC is recognized by the US Department of Education, but some perceive DETC accreditation as less prestigious than accreditation by one of the regional associations.

Excelsior and Thomas Edison both offer majors in accounting.
