I am in the process of applying to Northcentral's PhD program in Business Administration. I am currently teaching accounting and business as an adjunct at a community college and a university. The goal is a full-time position. My masters degree is in accounting, I was planning to specialize in Financial Management at Northcentral. The person I spoke to in admissions suggested getting my PhD in a field different from my Masters since I already have 21 graduate semester hours in accounting.

What are the pro and cons of getting the PhD in the same field vs a different field. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am assuming that the person in Admissions who offered that advice did so with the idea that since you already have 21 hours in Accounting, earning the PhD in another field would allow you to teach in two different areas. This might make you a more attractive candidate for a full-time position.

What do you want to teach? If you want to teach in the accounting / financial managmenet area, I think you should get it in that specialized area, but if you want to teach general business classes, a specialty in another area will help.

Also, you could look at a specialty area in your field (accounting), but in something like organizational behavior, or technology. Related, but your specailty will be even more specialized.

I would think the purpose of having another specialty would be diversity. Getting a PhD BA with an Accounting specialty would be like someone who gets a BS in Business, MBA, then a PhD in Business. There is not a lot of variety in their education, only depth.

And ofcourse, you would be able to teach two different subjects at a community college.

Accounting and financial management are two different fields. Related - yes. The same - no. Diversity is there.

    Stickman,

Have you actually applied? I'm looking seriously at this same program with a finance specialization.

    Messagewriter,

Yes, I have applied to the NCU PhD program. I decided to go with the Financial Management specialization. Hoping to start December 1, but my transcripts had not arrived as of yesterday. The admissions rep told me they would have to arrive no later than Friday to have a shot at starting Dec 1.
