Does anyone know if it is possible to get a tax credit while attending the University of london external program? If you are already attending and have used the tax credit could you please give me details.

    Thank you.

The problem with taking a U.S. income tax deduction for "tuition and fees" is that the school needs to have a Dept of Education financial aid number.

The various constituant colleges of the University of London DO have these numbers but the External Program itself does not, as far as I could see.

If you were my client, I would suggest that there is some risk here; if you decide to take the deduction, I suggest keeping on file the DOE numbers of the constituant schools that provide your UoL program and even including with your tax return a single paragraph letter explaining that you are claiming the deduction and why. That way, even if the deduction is disallowed, no one could accuse you of tax evasion or fraud.

Finally, since the amounts involved are NOT trivial, I would consult a tax practitioner before finally deciding what to do. There are also extensive resources available at www.irs.gov under "individual" forms and instructions.

You can look up the federal school codes here:

    http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fotw0405/fslookup.htm

Choose "foreign country" as the state.

Some codes for the University of London for 2004-05 are listed below. Long names get truncated.

Alex, if I remember correctly you are in the epidemiology: principals and practice program at UofL. I have just started that program. So I guess my question is, do you get a tax credit? If you do, do you list the school of tropical medicine and hygiene?

    Thanks.
