This is the first time I write on this board and I hope to find some advice.
I am a native speaker of Arabic and I am very interested in English Language. My aim is to have the Ph.D in Translation oneday.
Distance learning is the only way in which I can study. Some years ago when I leaved school,I had no idea about distance learning colleges and schools,so cahnces were limited for me.I had a diploma in Business English from Business Training Ltd in Manchester. Now I am studing another diploma from the same institute in Advanced Business English and I am also studing a diploma in Freelance writing from Education Direct in U.S.In few months, I will have the A level in English language and literature and enroll in Combridge certificate of proficiency in English.
My current level in English is excellent and I will be proficient by the time I finish my courses.
I found some universities offer Arabic-English-Arabic courses by distance learning.Unfortuenately,All courses are postgraduate qualifacations and require a BA degree.I knew also about Intercollege,Ltd which offers a translation course in two modules beginning and advance.I had the the replacement test online and was replaced in the advance module for postgraduate certificate. Then I knew that the PG certificate is open only for people who have BA although I will study the same mode and do the same assignments.
The Institution of linguistics in London holds an international pG diploma in translation every year but an applicant should have a honours degree in the source language.Herior Watt university , tow universities in South Africa, and a university in Astralia offer MA and pg diplomas in English-Arabic translation.I sent some requests explaining my level in the language and my studies but no encouraging reply was mailed to me.
Many people can tell me to have a BA degree. The problem is there is no specific major "linguistics,English, or litrature" will consider all the subjects I have studied since they are variouse but relevant to translation fuctions.I am 23 now and I have no time or money to wast in two year-"or more" BA degree. I want to start my pg studies in 2006 or before. My translation skill is good and I do not need to improve my English more to be able to translate.I feel it is not fir to deal with the applicant according to the degree h/she has gained without any regard to his/her other certificates and diplomas.
Some universities consider the previous work experience but I am still young and my experience is not long.
Can anyone advise me?Can I get MA degree or PG diploma without a BA degree? Are there any universities offer BA in less than one year in convenient fees "not more than 4000 Dollars"? I am realy disappointed and waiting for an answer.

    :( :( :(

    NHh:

I suppose I will chime in here. I would like to relieve your disappointment, but I fear that the gulf between your desires and your current circumstances is not easily bridged.

MAs and PG Diplomas are post-graduate credentials. Post-graduate means that you have already graduated with a bachelor's degree. I think that it is unlikely that any of the schools you mentioned would accept you without a bachelor's degree in hand.

Your strategy, then, is to obtain a bachelor's degree. You will, in all likelihood, have to relax your BA requirements, however (i.e., less than a year and $4,000 or less).

There are some US schools (Excelsior, Thomas Edison) which might give you some academic credit for your certificates, but you would still have to take lots of coursework to qualify for the degree. There are members of this board that have better knowledge of these schools than I do. The University of London External Programme would undoubtedly prove a useful avenue for a BA. It would cost considerably more than $4,000, but London allows you to pay as you go. As with most circumstances, time and money are inversely related.

I would discourage you from going to a "less than wonderful" school (to use a current euphemism) just to get a quick BA. Your goal is a post-graduate credential, so your BA would have to be from a school acceptable to the post-graduate program you are applying to. You are better off going to a recognized and/or accredited undergraduate program.

My advice? Slow down. You are still young. Get good credentials, even if it takes longer than you hope. It will serve you better later in life.

    Hope this helps.

Yes you can get a BA in less than 1 year

    NHh,
It is possible to get a BS/BA in less then 1 year, but it will depend on your motivation level. Check out a website from a guy who did what you are talking about. If you have the motivation, time you can do it.
