Hello, I am new to this forum and from what I have read so far, this is a great place to find info. I am looking for an online accelorated program from a "major" university. Is is there one out there? I have searched google and could not find one. I would like to have a degree from a university like; LSU or UofM or the like. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Rick
Reply You might want to go to your local bookstore and get the book "Bears Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning" or "Barron's guide to distance learning" both books have alot of information on credited distance learning schools they even mention a couple big name schools. If you cannot aford the book your local library will have it. I hope I helped Also, if you search this site the have a section that list colleges.
There are plenty of DL degrees from major universities, but there are fewer that are also accelerated. A good site is the National Universities Degree Consortium, which includes only major universities that offer DL degrees. www.nudc.org
Without knowing what you major is or what degree you want, here are some links to get started- http://www.gospelcom.net/bakersguide/programs.php http://www.gradschools.com/ http://www.worldwidelearn.com/ http://bain4weeks.com./ http://collegedegrees.tripod.com/ Good luck
The DANTES web site is a good place to start. http://www.dantescatalogs.com/DEDC/DEDCNav.asp Despite the .com domain, it is actually a Department of Defense (military) web site, so the information should be creditable.
I have checked into the above links and I still have not found what I am looking for. I need to clarify what exactly it is I would like to achieve. I am looking to get a 4 year degree at a major university. To do this I would like to take an accelerated program thru any college that offers such a thing. The kicker is I then need to transfer that degree to a Bachelor's program at a major university. That being said the major university does not need to be accelerated, just the associates. I am a full time active duty Army soldier that does not have the time to attend a traditional school. Thaks, Rick
This is probably stating the obvious, but have you talked to an education advisor at the education office of whatever post you are stationed? That is where I started there before I enrolled in my masters program.
Hmmm.... If you want an accelerated Associates and then a non-accelerated Bachelor's, the Big Three, COSC, Thomas Edison SC, and Excelsior College, would be a lock for the Associate's. Nothing is going to be nearly as quick if you have military or other life experience.
If you're planning on attending a 4-year program, it probably does not really matter where you get your associate degree. But if you do need a big name, Indiana University has an independent study A.A. http://scs.indiana.edu/pdf/gs_bulletin.pdf
Axe, I am an army vet, and understand your situation. As far as an accelerated degree from an accredited university, I can suggest my own: National University. It is a private university in CA with many campuses in urban and military areas. They offer a one-month format for classes, where you take a whole course in one month, still keeping the 45 hours of required student-teacher interaction. They are WASC accredited, and offer many bachelors online. They are expensive, but well worth it if it suits your needs. You can use TA and your GI Bill as well. Check them out: www.nu.edu I did my BS in Info Systems with them, and currently studying for my MBA at the MCRD location (All students allowed to take classes onbase get a 50% discount, courtesy of the school ) Good luck, and if you have any questions, my email is there.
I have a question about the "big 3" people mention on this site. Has anyone earned an associates with on of the 3 and used that to enroll into a major university (a big name one)? As everyone here knows (better than me) that it can be big problems transfering a degree/credits from one institute to another. That is why I am wondering if anyone here has done it. Thanks, Rick
Have you looked at getting your AA/AS from the "Big 3" through CLEP/DANTES. They are free to the military. When I was in the reserves, I earned 51 credits in 6 weeks with very little studying. How is that for accelarated? As far as transfering the associates degree to a "big name" university, the best thing to do is check with the "big name" university you want to attend and see what their requirements are to get into whatever program you are interested in. The Big 3 are all RA so that should not be an issue.
It would be a good idea to get your associate's from the same school you plan to earn your bachelor's. Inevitably, the core requirements for one degree will not match the other and you will waste some time and money. At the same time, each school's policies concerning CLEP and military credits will differ as well. To be safe, either get an associate's from the school you plan to attend--or at least from the same university system--or skip the associate's degree and enroll directly into a bachelor's program.
The more I read about online degree options the more confused I get. If you get a bachelor degree from an online school, do they give you a transcript with actual letter grades? How about the accelerated degrees? Do they give you a transcript with letter grades? I think this would be important information when you send in a resume. Thanks for your help. Rick
There are a couple of questions I've got for you after having read your initial postings. 1) By major universities do you mean Ivy League? Well known private universities? Nationally known state universities? One important difference will be cost. 2) What academic area(s) interest you most? Some big-name schools have DL programs but not in every imaginable subject. Jack
It depends on the particular school and how you do the courses. If you go the take a class route from most schools, the answer is yes. In fact for many of the programs (not all, but many) it is difficult to tell that you did not attend class.
Do you really need an associate degree? You do not need an associate degree to get into a four year school. You could accumulate credits by taking classes, taking tests such as CLEP, and working on portfolios. Remember that no school is obliged to accept all credits earned at another school. I also recall that their is a military community college that might meet your needs. Also check out the Coastline Community College Army program at http://mil.ccc.cccd.edu/army.htm
The military CC I was thinking of was the Air Force CC and it looks like it only serves AF personnel.
