    Hi all

I was doing some research about Diploma Mills (part of my job touches upon this area) - i came across Western Reserve University which pretty much comes across as a Diploma Mill.

    http://www.westonreserve.org/index.htm

I noticed it had a UK number which i rang - it came up with the usual generic female american voiced answering machine thing which asked to leave name and number - when i did, the call was picked up and i found myself speaking to a 'Prof Dr Ian Hale'.

Although most of what he said was standard Diploma Mill stuff he did make an interesting assertion that when their students hand in their dissertations etc, Western Reserve send then through UK NARIC - which apprently is the official UK 'guide' on degree standards etc. If NARIC say that the dissertation is below required standard then Western Reserve apparently take it back, work at it with student and amend it until it reaches required standard.

He was also quite honest about their degrees not being recognised in UK or US, but that they were hoping to get recognition in US.

I found the conversation quite interesting - although it did nothing to allay my overall opinion that its a diploma mill, i was suprised that they use an official agency like NARIC.

Is NARIC an official agency? does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Your link is to "Weston Reserve University" though you typed "WESTERN Reserve University".

WESTON Reserve is a mill. Search this forum for more information.

Don't confuse Weston Reserve with the prestigious CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY located in Cleveland, Ohio USA.

    spelling is not quite that

    Hi,

The spelling: is "Weston," not "Western."

    NARIC is here.

    More about Weston is here.

    Hi all

Apologies for the spelling error - your quite right

    WESTERN is legit................WESTON isn't!

I was aware of the difference, just forgot to spellcheck!

But my point was that I was suprised that they used NARIC to judge their degrees - if this is true, then doesnt it make their degrees somewhat worthwhile - despite their otherwise 'Mill' status?

Or am i being a bit naive here?

    naive

At this point, what you know is that a sales rep for an unaccredited degree-granting entity said that NARIC has something to do with looking over their students. You have no independent confirmation of this statement at the present time.

Did you ask the Prof. Dr. Ian Hale if he was wearing a plaid sportsjacket? [For non-North Americans: the stereotypical dishonest used-car salesmen dresses this way.]
