I am quite familier with the perception of Canadian and British degress in the US... anyone have experience regarding Aussy credentials?

It seems to me that they are well respected.

I have a Masters from the Northern Territory University of Australia and worked as correspondence writer for four Australian Ministers of Education in Canberra.

Australian university degrees are well respected and internationally recognised. There is controversy only over Greenwich University, which registered in Norfolk Island before the Australian Federal government realised what was happening (Norfolk Island has a special administrative status). Greenwich University degrees are not recognised by the Australian Federal Government. Australian Universities are generally ranked in six bands. The highest is Band 1. Band 6 universities are still all right but tend to take students with lower entrance scores and some academic staff of lower caliber.

    Bernard:

Given this system of ranking, where would Greenwich fit into the system, i.e., of course, if the bands continued beyond 6?

    Band on the Run?
    One Man Band?
    Contraband?

Hmm...how about "bandito"? Or, since we're talking about Australia, what about "bandicoot"? Personally, I think their category should simply be "Banned."

Is this another clever play on the word "band," or do you have a serious objection to the Australian degrees? If you do, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion.

It just hit me that your comment was directed specifically at Greenwich. Got it. Just took a bit to get there.

Exactly, the comments were directed at Greenwich. No problem with Aussie degrees.

Just the other day I had a nice prime rib at Outback Steakhouse, topped off with Chocolate Thunder from Down Under. [IMG]

No vegemite, Bill! I left my heaping helping of vegemite for Crocodile Dundee and Angus Young of ACDC. Wow, all this talk of the Outback makes me hungry. Guess I'll pay them a visit tomorrow evening! [IMG]

It is funny how all of us English speakers are separated by food.

I grew up with an English grandmother and so my first Christmas in the Army (overseas) was a shock. No plum pudding with custard sauce!!! Not to mention having seen my last plate of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, trifle, welsh cakes, sweat breads (meat), bottle of HP sauce, or cup of English breakfast tea/Nabob Black Indian tea(until I got out of the barracks and bought my own).

From what I understand Americans can't stand the "Koolaid" that we Canadians call iced tea.

Ugh! Is that the sweetened, flavored stuff?

Australian degrees a fine - and in many cases amongst the best within the Pacific rim.

In relation to Greenwich Island (& Greenwich University) - well, Greenwich Island is to Australian what Guam & the American Samoan islands are to the United State.

Except down here in the South, where everybody drinks their iced tea heavily sweetened. Nobody understand why McDonald's still serves unsweetened iced tea down here, unless it's for the benefit of visiting Yankees.

Elsewhere, too. We were driving through Utah a few summers ago and stopped in a diner. I asked for iced tea, then sweetened it with Equal, not knowing it had been sweetened already [IMG] . Ick. They assured me they didn't sweeten the Diet Coke....

Yes sir! When I was a kid we used to have iced tea occasionally and it came out of a can of crystals. I had never had sun tea before. Then when I came to the US (Army overseas) I met a Chaplain from Texas. He used to carry his small cooler with sun tea in it everywhere he went. When I first had the real thing I could not stand it. I wondered how anyone could do that to tea.

Is there an official online listing somewhere of the bands, how schools are rated, and which schools are in which bands?

    Thanks,

    John
