I thought i'd drop a line to submit a website: http://www.cvu-uvc.ca/ this is the front page of the "canadian virtual university " consortium. This consortium groups only fully chartered (under each province's law ) universities ( in Canada provinces enjoy broad powers and by doing so they enact the constitution ). They all offer courses, certificates & diplomas ( from associate to Ph.D ) via distance learning. Acadia Athabasca University British Columbia Open University Laurentian University Memorial University of Newfoundland Royal Military College Royal Roads University Télé-université du Québec The University of Manitoba University College of Cape Breton University of New Brunswick Degrees through Télé-université du Québec are taught in french ( other universities offer such an opportunity as well ). It may be said that by virtue of Québec/France agreements, degrees from Québec universities (Hence Télé-université du Québec ) may be equipollent at face value ( i'm not sure about the details, however ). http://conted.acadiau.ca/ http://www.athabascau.ca/ http://www.ola.bc.ca/bcou/home.html http://www.laurentian.ca/cce/index.htm http://www.distance.mun.ca/ http://www.rmc.ca/academic/continuing/ http://www.royalroads.ca/ http://www.teluq.uquebec.ca/ http://www.umanitoba.ca/coned/distance/ http://www.uccb.ns.ca/distance/ http://www.unb.ca/coned/distance/index.html as well: http://www.rrc.mb.ca/ http://www.humber.ca/ As well, canadian degrees are easily recognized in the UK & the Commonwealth. Once again it has to be stressed that these are fully chartered, government funded & compliant institutions. There is no shady "private" outfit & there is no "accreditation" question.
Unfortunately, no PhD is offered in Canada by DL. The closest thing to a DL PhD in Canada is the one offered by Tele Quebec in Cognitive science but it is not 100% as face to face contact is required.
since i could find on here no explicit mention of the canadian situation, i thought i'd better post what i knew for everyone to see. Of course different institutions may have varying requirements.
I think University of Western Ontario, University of Windsor and University of Guelph also offer DL degrees... I know for certain that Univ of Western Ontario now offers distance MBAs. GMAT is required of course, for almost all MBA admissions in Ontario. Minimum score of 500...
Yes i read something to that extent. the added benefit of the CVU consortium is that ( to varying degrees ), participating institutions AGREE TO CREDIT EXCHANGES & EQUIPOLLENCE. That's an added bonus not to worry about credit transfer. As well, it all depends on what the DL/DT box actually contains, not the wrapper. I contacted some AUSTRALIAN universities offering fully DL degrees...on paper...only to find out that they would require AT LEAST TWO IN-PERSON VISITS A YEAR. In my opinion, that's not quite DL anymore, but something like sabbatical research leave ( i took 4 sessions sabbatical research leave during my Ph.D, when i'd pay no fees & not counting towards the max time requirement ).
