I've been looking into Capella for their Ph.D. in Human Services-Criminal Justice concentration. I've been very impressed with their responsiveness (helpful & informative, but not pushy) and the apparent rigor & quality of the program. The limited residency (18 days for doctoral students) is also attractive.

One thing I really like is you can try one or two courses without enrolling in a degree program, or even take a 4-course certificate w/o enrolling in a degree program, and all credits will count towards the degree, should you decide later to enroll. An excellent way to test the waters without a major investment of money.

I've been talking with Capella for the last few months, transfer evaluation is complete, all I need to do to complete application is the academic goals statement and send my check.

While in many cases you're correct that a certificate will roll into a degree program (as their catalog also clearly states), there's one big exception that I didn't find out until I specifically asked. If you max out your transfer credit from a previous degree (in my case 48 credits from a Masters into a doctorate) the certificate courses will not transfer into your degree program. Those four classes for cert are actually considered transfer credits, and if you're already maxed on transfer then don't bother with the certificate.

I was looking at the certificate like you were... a way to test the waters without taking the dive. It also has the added benefit of the per class tuition instead of their degree tuition (doctoral) of a flat $3,300 per quarter, regardless of how many classes you take.

The curriculum at Capella is quite attractive for my area of study. But I'm having a hard time coming to grips with $13,200/yr tuition, whether I take 4 classes or 12. The only way to flatten that tuition rate is to take a heavy course load. Considering most of us looking for DL programs have families and careers, that's not an attractive option.

Anyway, the certificate may be a good start for you depending on your program and transfer situation. Just make sure you check before you jump into it. You'd hate to finish the cert just to find out you can't use the credit.

A very good point. I haven't yet made formal application to Capella, but in my admittedly amateur opinion, I don't think I'd max out in transfer credit. My Master's is 33 semester credits, and some classes I haven't been able to find a relevant class at Capella.

Even if I did max out on transfer credit I'll probably try one course, just to see if I liked the method of delivery. The cost of one course (<$1000) would be worth it just to make sure I was comfortable with the program.

As for the tuition, it is a bit on the high side, but pretty much in-line with the other RA DL doctoral programs I've looked at (Union, Walden).
