According to an admissions counselor at Northcentral University, NCU was granted full Candidacy status by the North Central Association, on May 21.

The counselor stated that the plan is to move forward in achieving full accreditation.

It will be interesting to see how far their tuition rises. If they are smart it will not rise too much or they will simply become one among many, although they will have a better sounding name than Capella, Walden, or Argosy.

It would seem to me that where they could corner the market in their area would be to keep the tution lower. They might capture some of that market that wants a higher degree but does not want to spend too much for it and so goes the unaccredited route. The rest of the group that does not want to do the work for an accredited Ph.D. you can't help. I do realize there are some who do good work at unaccredited schools, and some at schools like BJU which do exceptional work.

I asked the counselor that very question, and her reply was that NCU had no plans to raise tuition again until full accreditation was achieved. She said that NCU hoped to accomplish this in about two years.

Someone posted this information on www.about.com a few days ago. There isn't anything on either NCU's or NCA's website.

If candidacy was/is granted without residency requirements being placed into the doctoral programs I owe Wes a six-pack of Coors (or Coors Lite, I forget).

    Rich,

I saw that post and called NCU yesterday. The counselor said that verbal approval had been given on May 21, and that when the official letter arrives at NCU, it would be formally placed on the website.

I also asked about the doctoral residency requirement, to which she replied that there are none. The computer/camera scenario will provide the necessary student/faculty contact to satisfy this requirement.

A formal meeting took place between Northcentral and NCA -- on May 21st and 22nd -- during which Northcentral University was advised candidacy was accomplished and awarded but that both parties agreed no announcement would be made until the written document was sent from NCA and received by Northcentral U. NCA promised this document by the end of May. Expect a formal announcement likely today or tomorrow.

Rich: It's diet Coors by the way.

    Regards to all.

Rich: Forget about the six-pack of diet Coors, it would just sit in the frig for months -- until someone else drank it. It was fun though!

I am finishing up my first course at NCU, -- Psychopathology. My experience has been excellent. Although I don't have the liberty of designing any of my six courses in either, content or method, I have found my first course to be flexible in terms of assignment deadlines. In other words, my mentor has allowed me to delay submitting some assignments due to my recent family addition and business commitments. I still must however, complete all of the work by the end of my four-month semester.

I will enroll for my second course (likely Ethics of Psychology Practice)effective late July.

    Regards, Wes
