There is a fully accredited university called Vanguard university here in Southern California, but I didn't find anything about them offering PhDs online. Do you have a link to their website?

There seems to be more than one Vanguard and its not clear which one you are talking about.

For the $25 thousand american dollars a year, that Dr. Bear mentioned, the California Vanguard must be excellent.

If you are refering to the other Vanguard, its not really Vanguard University, its Vanguard University of Science and Technology........(out of breath).

 

Thank you for the reference, Bullet. I had not been aware of the other Vanguard you pointed out. This is a good reminder that people who ask about a school should, when possible, provide a website.

I've looked at their website, and still can't figure out if they are a Costa Rican university resident in Africa, or a Cameroonian university resident in Costa Rica, or some of each. President Benlish's Email address is in the UK, and the website seems registered in Toronto, Canada.

Director Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut seems to be in Indiana, and he is indeed a published author: The Marriage of Sex, Love and God; The Growth Illusion; Keeping It Real in an Unreal World: Staying as Real as Possible in a World of Illusion, etc. Director Schut also seems to be a defender of what the Pittsburgh paper called a billion-dollar Costa Rican "Ponzi" investment scheme last year:

So far I don't see much to recommend this one, but it bears further investigation.

Probably coincidentally, the *other* Vanguard -- the properly accredited one in California -- was one of two schools that the bogus St. Regis University claimed, a couple of years ago, had accepted their degrees and credits. Not so.

Vanguard University of Science and Technology appears to have a parent.

 

I just did a Google search for "vanguard university of science and technology". It generated a grand total of eight hits.

Of these, two were Vanguard pages, five pages belonged to something called 'business-international-costarica.com', which apparently is Vanguard's parent company, and one page belongs to something called 'henrysamuelson.com'.

Depite this thing purporting to offer doctoral degrees, seemingly no academic, professional or scholarly webpage mentions it, whether in the US, Latin America or Africa.

And scary as the thought is, Vanguard includes a medical school. I did a search for "wallace c. moseley" and got a grand total of four hits, from the three same sources.

In my opinion, this is not the kind of Google signature that one would expect from a real university.

Hello Jack: Welcome to the forum. I have a few questions after reading your school's website.

1) Are you accredited by the government in either Cameroon or Costa Rica?

2) It's very unusual to offer a doctorate which does not require a dissertation or similar very major research project. How does a clerkship adequately substitute for this?

3) Somewhere on the website it said that Costa Rican citizens could not enrol in certain programs. In the United States, certain very dubious schools skirt the law by refusing to enrol students in the states where the school offices are located. How does your school's restriction differ?

Please bear in mind that I am an enthusiastic advocate of African-based distance learning--and very concerned about the structural integrity of distance education providers.

Thank you for your question. I would be happy to answer your questions and you can call me or I can call you.

Frankly, there are so many self proclaimed experts on these Boards and their expertise already covers Vanguard University (see the posts above) that I see no reason for me to discuss our vision, there are others who have done "google searches".


My telephone is listed as well as my address; there is nothing to hide and we are not hiding.

Those who are involved in Vanguard University of Science and Technology are outstanding members of the community and have NEVER been involved in illegal activities of any kind. A Degree Mill is an illegal activity; but I am not surprised to see the kind of ignorant posting as those reflected here.

Here is the main problem, I am not aware of what Degree Mills try to do in the United States to circumvent legislation.

It would be absurd for me to try to do something like this, since costa rica is one country and there are only 3 million of us and 1 million nicaraguans. I have family members who are former legislators and my step father just got finished with an honorable service as an Ambassador; in other words the Benlisha family is an old morrcoccian jewish family and we have no place to hide and we are not doing anything illegal. My partner in Cameroon, Feh Henry Baaboh, is not any "under the rock" solicitor and advocate, he is the Senior Partner of a very well respected legal firm in Cameroon. He has participated in well established Pan-African reunions, like for example on the death penalty as a national coordinator representing Cameroon. So, we are serious. Or do you think we are going to play with our reputations to play Degree Mill games and destroy a life times worth of work?

Second Point:

Costa Rica currently has (9) Medical Schools, all traditional. This is crazy, (9) medical schools in this small country.

Currently we have a (1) physician for every 1,100 habitants, a very ridiculous number and matters only get worse with over 500 hundred new medical graduates joing the ranks of the unemployed every year.

Africa on the other hand is begging for physicians. So we sought Recognition from the Government of Cameroon, Africa for many reasons. It feels wonderful to be able to offer distance education to those who really need a break in life and trust me, africans are people too.

We are currently negociating with Costa Rican medical schools for an affiliation program for those who would like to complete (2) years of education onsite, even though traditional medical education is not our forte, we are willing to help out those who would like this option.

And on to your last question, remember we are a distance learning university based out of Cameroon, Africa with an extension campus in Costa Rica, all legal under our charter. We are willing to analyze on a case by case basis, students who would like to realize a professional practice in exchange for not writing a doctoral thesis. The website does not read "open season" for not writing doctoral thesis. It is all evaluated on a case by case basis, which is our right to do so.

The listing of professors is more of a practice in the United States. If I were to tell you that I have a famous Internal Medicine physician by the name of Jorge Flores or a Surgeon that is respected by the name of Luis Mauricio Ramirez, what will this mean to you? Nothing. Graduates of The University of Costa Rica, Unibe, La Havana Medical School, Cali Colombia, Managua, Nicaragua, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Panama City Panama and Cameroon, Africa work with us.

We know they are qualified and that is what counts to us.

Please forgive me. I did not answer why we do not accept costa rican citizens in our Medical Education Program.

There are (9) traditional medical education universities already; so there are plenty for the Costa Rican poplulation to choose from.

As I mentioned we are negociating with a couple of schools already.

We are NOT prohibited from accepting costa rican citizens; but we choose not to do so out of courtesy, something that is very important in the latin culture.

Oh and by the way, for the expert google research poster, we are a new school, give us time.

No one has accused you of hiding or having something to hide. That is precisely why I ask this question on a public forum. By making a truthful and public reply here, you have a chance to prove these “self-proclaimed experts” wrong. So, I pose my question once again.

From which country and what ministry does Vanguard University of Science and Technology derive its degree granting authority?

This is a fundamental question of interest to any potential student. Either an institution has legitimate degree granting authority or it doesn't.

Vanguard says that it awards professional degrees in a whole assortment of fields, including architecture, civil engineering, business, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, exercise physiology, psychology, health administration, law and education.

But apparently no academic, scholarly, medical, governmental or professional webpages have ever mentioned it.

I don't think that's the internet signature of a credible institution.

Even if Vanguard is new, it's very difficult to believe that such an ambitious new university would have received no notice.

By comparison, the Intercultural Institute of California, a tiny institution that offers one single masters program and is still seeking accreditation, generated more than a thousand hits.
