I will try to be as brief as possible. I am 36, have never been to college, although I could have went on a full scholarship due to my grades and ACT scores. I have built a successful career in management, despite not having a degree, but would like to obtain a bachelor's degree by distance learning.

I started with just one course this semester from our local community college's online program, I was too late to enroll in any others. I had to take the COMPASS test to get started since my ACT scores were so old. The admissions counselor said he had never seen such high scores. I aced to english side, and nearly a perfect score on the math.

I am sure I could do well with the CLEP tests so I would like to take some of those this semester since I only got into one class. Here is what I need to know. The bachelor's degree program that I want to use is from a state run university here in North Carolina, available 100% through distance learning. The requirement to be accepted is to have completed the first 2 years of general education from a community college. University of North Carolina-Pembroke is the school.

When I take the CLEP, I assume that I would have the credits applied to the community college towards my general education, is that correct? Currently I only want to take some of the general CLEP subject tests to get a start on the basic education credits I need.

What amount of credit is reasonable to expect getting from CLEP testing, particularly the general education battery as it is called? This includes English Comp, Humanities, Math, Natural Science, and Social Science & History.

Also any advice to help on these CLEP tests would be greatly appreciated. I have always done extremely well on tests, so I think with the proper preparation, that should continue.

This is my first post on these forums, but I am amazed at all the helpful people that seem to be around here based on other threads I have read.

Thanks in advance for the help!

As a rule always check with the Institution that you want to transfer credits and or transfer taken exams. As other may suggest you can check with the big three.

    Welcome!

Both the community college and the University of NC-Pembroke accept CLEP testing for credit, I just checked to make sure.

    :)

With that said, then is kind of hard for anyone to predict how many credits or tests for that matter, a specific Institution will accept towards a degree program. :)

Your information indicates that you reside in/or near Raleigh, which means you are probably referring to Wake Tech College (if not look up the right one here: http://www.ncccs.cc.nc.us/colleges_map.htm). They have a department for students looking to transfer (College/University Transfer Advising Center). Answering these questions is what they do, and they can probably give you a better answer then anyone here.

BTW have you looked at: http://bain4weeks.com/ ?

I picked roughly 100 schools at random, 7 or 8 years ago, to see how much CLEP credit they gave, and to compare that with Excelsior's 6 semester units for an exam.

The range was 0 to 4 (with the exception of Excelsior's 6). Roughly 1/4 gave no credit at all, many gave 1 or 2, a smaller number 3, and a much smaller number 4.

I have been told by readers that they have 'laundered' credits, by putting CLEP credits on their Excelsior credit bank transcript -- and then there are schools that accept those credits on a regionally accredited school's transcript, when they would not accept the 'raw' CLEP exam.

    Hi Knight

Be very careful about this issue. Almost all schools I hve checked accept SOME CLEP credits, but not all. I would call the graduation office is ask specifcly do they accept all CLEP tests? If not, which ones? I would also get a full name and even see if they can send you their answer in writing. :)
