I've been waffling about getting a doctorate for some time now. Regardless, I cannot do so for at least 15 more months, due to financial constrants. Having said that...

I've been considering Argosy University for a long time because they have a branch campus in my city. And until recently, I didn't know how much they charged per doctoral credit -- until today. They charge a whopping $750 per doctoral credit!!! Thus, a 3 credit class would cost $2250 and a 4 credit class would cost $3000!!! Be still my beating heart!!!

I was accepted by them to do the Doctorate in Accounting, which I would have, Ace with my eyes close, but got scare too, due to the High tuition. I do not see my self-paying $30,000 plus  for a diploma and not get the return back. For now, I think am done with the idea of Doctorate. Maybe, I would consider a DETC Doctorate in the future.

    Doctoral Costs

Every time I see one that interests me, I check the pricetag. Ouch. I've said it before on this board; I cannot see getting a doctorate, ESPECIALLY in education, if it doesn't pay off. You are better putting that money in a interest bearing account.

I suppose the title "doctor" is worth it for some. For me, I got an online "reverend" certificate for vanity purposes that serves me well.

If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Derek Bok.

Arguments for or against pursuing a degree based upon the expense/return ratio are certainly pertinent, but the fact remains that it is an expensive endeavor.

he true costs are even greater than the figures listed on the various sites. You will end up buying software, books, additional books, shipping and handling costs, and others.

I figure I have paid out about 30+% over the fees and tuition (not counting travel expenses).

Note this also holds true for a masters degree.

I did not realize it was $750/unit. The last time I paid tuition (not that long ago) it was $530/unit. I just looked on the site, and for Orange County (where I earned my D.B.A.) it is now $600/unit.

Doctoral tuitions vary at Argosy depending on your major at the orange facility. A PsychD is $750/unit. A DBA or an EdD is $600. I checked out the Chicago tuition, and it is $750/unit regardless of major. So, for those looking at Argosy and comparing costs, make sure you are looking at the campus where you will be going.

As for the economics of a doctorate, I doubt one can make a strong economic argument for any doctorate save those in the medical fields (MD, DDS, DVM, etc.), and with today's environment I wonder how much longer those will be viable. I went after my doctorate for reasons other than money, which means I will not be disappointed. In my case:

    BSBM- Professional survival
MBA- Marginal Revenue/Marginal Cost (meaning- I did it for the money)
    DBA- Marginal Utility

If I had to do it over again, I would (once is enough, thank you- I'm not into whips and chains). However, I did not do it for the money, or to be called Dr. It was purely personal reasons.
