Hello everyone....writing to you from Baton Rouge, LA. and have a few questions. I'm sorry if this is something posted all the time. I am a criminal justice professional with almost 9 years in the field. I am looking for a completely online school that is accredited(regionally if possible) and will give the max I can get out of experiential credit. I am also looking for a school that is not going to slam my pocketbook.(500 a credit hour) I don't want to mention the names of the schools I've already talked to that are really high as I'm not out to flame anyone. I also know that online programs are always going to cost more than traditional schooling, but I'm just trying to get the biggest bang for my buck. Thanks everyone for the help. :)

I just looked at my thread and realized I needed to put more info. I am looking to get a Bachelors degree in CJ or one of the many variations of it. I have a few college credits to transfer but not many. Also the reason I state I am most interested in the regionally accredited schools is that I am looking to go to law school after completing my bachelor's program. Thanks again for the help.

Excelsior College and Thomas Edison State College are two highly touted universities that you should look at.

Thanks Me Again....I just looked into Thomas Edison and can't find anything relating to the CJ field as far as degrees go. I have looked at Excelsior in the past, and I was curious. Aren't they a consortium that puts you together with other schools that offer online classes? I wasn't sure but I don't think they carry 100% programs that they put together. Thanks again for the help.

I second the recommendation (especially Thomas Edison State, if you're looking for portfolio credit)--and soupbone, choosing one of these places means that if you play your cards right, you'll pay substantially less than you would pay if you did the degree from scratch at a brick-and-mortar institution. I did mine for something in the neighborhood of $3,000 by relying on exams.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,

Thanks for the input everyone. I have researched a lot of schools that offer CJ programs. I have been talking to Colorado Technical University and they seem to be fine. I just didn't know if there may be any more out there that offer the most for experiential credit. It's not easy trying to drudge through all these schools to find out which one would be best for me. Thanks for all the help and let me know if you have any more schools or ideas. Thanks

    Mountain State University

Mountain State has been great to me so far. They gave me credit for all of my prior college credit plus gave me approx. 40 credits for my police academy training.

There are several writing assignments for each course but the instructors will work you through them and you are required to be online for one chat session each week. You take one practicum course the entire 16 weeks and the other courses run one every 4 or 5 weeks at a time so you only take two courses at a time.

The good thing about the ADCJ program is that once you finish with the B.S. you can go right into the masters program.

They also offer approx. 250 other courses that can be taken by independent study and you can start them anytime you want to.

    They also accept financial aid.

Any other help I can give you just shoot me an email.

I have had a great experience with MSU. The IS courses have been great. I could recommend them to anyone.

Thanks for the tips and help guys. Badger, I would like some more info from you if possible. I am a law enforcement professional from Louisiana. I have been in this field for almost 9 years now. I have a few transfer credits and approximately 500 hours of specialized training in law enforcement. My basic academy was 280 hours of training which is seperate from the 500 hours of specialized. I am trying to find the school that would be willing to give me the best bang for my buck so to speak. I am not trying to take the easy way out by any means, but as you know online schools are more expensive than traditional. I have looked into Mountain State, and a few others. Right now I'm talking with Colorado Technical University, but I'm just not sure if this is the right school or not. Anyways....you can PM me if you want to chat privately. Also any of you guys that have any other ideas, I would appreciate it too and you can email me as well. Thanks you guys for all the help.

Hello again guys....I have a few more questions. As you know I am looking for a fully online Bachelors degree program in Criminal Justice which accepts the most credits for experiential learning, and specialized training hours. I have had a few great suggestions for schools such as Mountain State which I am looking into as well as Colorado Technical University which I am looking into also. My new question is do any of you or have any of you ever taken correspondence courses of some type(online or paper) while you were enrolled in an online program? I ask this because I am trying to shorten the time it's going to take to complete my degree program. Anyways...thanks for your time.

    soupbone,

Hello. I would highly recommend Umass Lowell. I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor's in Information Technoloy program and am very pleased. It's not the cheapest, but the quality of education and the rep of the school make it worthwhile.
