Hey gang, I'm new here and I've been enjoying all of the discussion about the different distance learning programs out there.

Personally, I'm looking for a distance learning PhD program in education that will allow me to focus on E-Learning / distance learning, etc. I'm hoping to do my dissertation on e-learning and medical education. I'm a physician currently in my residency, so I don't have the option of attending a traditional university and I don't really want a program that requires a residency either.

Some people have mentioned that Northcentral University is currently offering a PhD in education online. Is this correct? I quickly browsed their website and didn't find it. Is this a new program?

Also, what is the scoop with Touro International? I'm hearing mixed messages about them being accredited and then that they are unaccredited. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know.

I've also looked at Walden, Capella, Nebraska, and Purdue. If anyone has any other recommendations, please share them.

Thanks in advance for your input. I look forward to hearing from you all.

    Regards,

    G.

Generally, there are three or four main criteria that people discuss regarding such programs. In no particular order they are:
    1) cost
    2) method of instruction
    3) research interest "fit"
    4) residencies
If you really can't do any residencies then you've probably already eliminated at least half your list. My guess is that if you examine the instructors list from the remainder of your choices you'll find one or two schools that come closer than the others to your particular range of research interests. Apply to both. Make the final decision based on a) how you feel you've been treated so far, navigating the system, etc. b) additional communications with faculty regarding the "fit" criteria above, c) cost.
    Good luck,
    Jack

The NCU doctoral program in education is still in the development stage from what I understand and will be accepting students in the near future.

You might consider Fielding Graduate Institute www.fielding.edu. There is one 4 day residency requirement, but they are held around the country. If interested, I encourage you to contact a professor named Bernard Luskin who focuses on Higher Ed and Media Studies.
    Good luck!

You may also want to consider Nova Southeastern, which has a doctoral program in instructional technology and distance education, much of which can be completed via distance with short residency requirements. Nova also has graduate programs in osteopathy and medicine, which may provide you with access to faculty expertise that would allow you to meet your goals of combining e-learning and medicine. Most of the other universities mentioned thus far may not have anyone in residence with a strong enought health background.

I'm pretty sure that Dr. Gulick would already know about the programs in osteopathy and medicine at Nova. :)

    Touro

I'm currently in my 4th quarter at Touro in the PhD E-learning program. I'm surprised that someone has not commented on TUI's situation as it has seemingly been discussed here on the forum. Do a search on TUI or Touro.

TUI is now accredited. It is in the process of transferring it's accreditation from one accrediting agency to another.

The PhD program is now closed and not accepting applicants, another source of speculation.

Many on this board have commented on whether or not this will happen / is viable etc.

As a current student I am happy with the curriculum, its scope and the level of difficulty. While I wish TUI would be more proactive in its communication, I am not overly concerned with it's accreditation status.

In looking at TUI before enrolling, the other institutions I considered were Capella (expensive and has some residency which might be addressed by attending sessions in your area), Walden (same) and NOVA.

    Good luck,

    Reggie Ryan

I want to thank you all for the information regarding different PhD programs. I think I finally found the program I was looking for... NSU offers a PhD in Computing Technology in Education which sounds fantastic.

Thanks again... And Krazymack was right, I'm pretty familiar with the medical school at NSU. I spent a lot of time there! :D

Sorry, my preface, "as you know" did not make it into the message.
