Ok, I need to take a college algebra course....I can't test out of it because I need this course to prepare me for a series of other math courses that I have to take. Has anyone taking this course via self-paced online/correspondence? If so, please name the school(s) and share your experience.

Also, if anyone has taking Calculus I and II via self-paced online/corresponced I need info on this course too.

    Thanks in advance

Upper Iowa has eight week online courses (math 105 college algebra, math 109 finite math, and math 220 statistics), they also have these course via correspondence, though if you cannot take the course in person, I would recommend online then correspondence. Just my two cents. www.uiu.edu

I haven't taken self-paced courses, but I do know that at TESC (which you asked about earlier), the regular "Guided Study" courses are 16 weeks long, which is a pretty long semester. The online courses are typically 12 weeks. They're also quite liberal about granting extensions, so it's almost self-paced.

By the way, I hope that you won't be jumping straight from Algebra to Calculus. Without taking Precalculus first, you'll find things like asymptotics, limits, and series to be baffling. Without taking Trigonometry first, you might find simplifying transcendental functions for integration and differentiation to be impossible.

University of Texas has a web-based College Algebra class, a paper-based Calculus I/II for Business and Economics sequence, and a paper-based two semester Calc 1-3 sequence for math, engineering, and science majors. There is also another prerequisite for the two-semester sequence. I am currently taking the Sequences, Series, and Multivariate (equivalent to the second half of calc 2 + calc 3) through them and find it considerably more challenging than the Calculus 1 and 2 I took twelve years ago at Clarkson University. It is effectively an Honors Calculus sequence. Differential and Integral Calculus would be their calc 1 + first half calc 2 course.

University of Texas is relatively inexpensive, but if you want teacher-interaction, their straight snail mail courses are probably not the best choice.

I have a complete study plan for doing a math major by distance with cost a serious consideration in choosing schools.

Try Limestone College, that is where I took the online Algebra class, along with 100+ other hours :)

Tuition seems quite high ($660) per 3 semester hour course...Are these courses self-paced?

Yes they have raised rates! About 3 years ago I took it on line, it was self paced but you had due dates when 2-3 exams (proctored-10-20 questions) were due, outside of that, if you had any questions of the proff, you just emailed back and forth. The course was about 8 weeks long. If you need more time, they could possibly give you an extension, I had seen other students obtain a little extra time. It was painless!
    Hope this helps,
    Gavin
