There are the unaccredited bogus degrees from Liberia and the well respected degrees from South Africa. How about about other African countries and universities-the University of Zimbabwe or Namibia to name two. Are these respected and GAAP? Are there any othe DL degree programs from any other African countries besides South Africa?

Not that I know of, but I hope there are. I'd rather spend tuition money at an African university than a lot of places I can think of.

The last time I checked, neither U of Zimbabwe nor UNam were offering DL. I got a very poignant e-mail from a faculty member at U Zimbabwe, replying to an enquiry of mine about DL, describing how everything was gone to hell in a handcart in the last two years under Hot Bob, no funding, gunmen running amok, secret police, etc., etc.

There was a poster (?) Musasira (?) from Tanzania here for a while. Maybe he mentioned something on non-SA African DL.

Well obviously there a lot of other African universities and I think that a few may even offer DL degrees of some description. However, the most common problem with these programs, IIRC is that the language of instruction is something other than English. Once upon a time I went through the list in a reasonably thorough manner and came up with nothing outside of South Africa. That was several years ago at this point and as we know, many things can change in that time span. It might be worth rechecking.

    Oy.

Bullet, this place raises a whole lotta questions goin' on.
I appreciate your research, but I'm not too sure what it is you found.

    1) Why, in Cameroon, the Latin American focus and administrators (as per diploma pictures).
1a) If a real Cameroonian (?) school, why bilingual English-Spanish instead of French-English?
    2) Diploma pictures often a sign of mills--often, not absolutely always.
    3) Med school by DL? Um, I'll stick with my Cebuana firecracker, thanks all the same.
    4) FAQ page not working--are these folks accredited by Cameroon?
    5) Explanatory page mentioned Costa Rica but made no mention of Cameroon. How so?
    6) Here's their admission office, a long way from Tipperary, Cameroon:
    Admissions
Vanguard University of Science and Technology 250 meters west of the South Side of the Heredia Hospital.
    Heredia City, Costa Rica.
U.S. Fax Service and Voice Mail: 1-305-xxx-xxxx
    Costa Rican Office:
    Tel-Fax: (506) xxx-xxxx
    [my x's on phone numbers-janko]
    7) Only one poster on their forum was somebody in Ireland. Who is he?

I am sure there are legit universities in Cameroon. I am not yet sure this is one of them.

    good question

It seems the spanish portion of the website is better developed than the english portion.

On the spanish portion is where I found the name of the Lawyer who represents the school in Cameroon.

At any rate..........I dont know these answers, but I will ask them.

The only ones I know of are in South Africa. South Africa had very close ties to Britian for the longest and then attempted to maintain a European style country after that.

Of course that was balanced on the backs of black South Africans. So far the government is managing a delicate balancing act of attempting to maintain the postive elements of the country (Education, democratic system except applied to all South Africans). It is tough for them and neighbors are not doing anywhere near as well so due to outside and internal pressures it could collapse. It is to be hoped that the positve forces within the country and the good will can hold everything together. It has the potential to be the shinning example in Africa.

    U. of Zimbabwe reviewing papers for degree

Thanks for all responses. I wrote to many of the Association of Commonwealth Universities in Africa to see if they had a doctorate by published works program and received only 2 responses. (I also wrote several in Great Britain) I received many replys from the UK and the answer was either no or only for those connected to the University through teaching on the faculty or by prior graduation. Three did consider reviewing my papers, transcripts etc. for a doctorate. Middlesex university in England sent me a letter about a month after receiving my papers saying "I would not be admitted to the degree" The U. of the Western Cape e-mailed after receiving my papers that "They would not be able to honor my request and they indicated they were wrong in telling me that I might be able to earn some credential by published works" and the U. Of Zimbabwe is currently evaluating my papers in the College of Health Sciences . It is going on about 3 months. The last E-mail they sent me was 3 August and said "The Dean of College of Health Sciences is still going through your papers. We will get back to you when he is through. Thank you.
I wrote a unifying paper along with my submitted publications, advanced graduate coursework and hope they will admit me to the degree- but it's a long shot. I 'll let you all know when the process is completed - I did pay the application fee so I'm enrolled.

    Keep us posted...

    Hey bullet,

When you find out about this Vanguard University, please keep us posted. I know that I personally would be very interested in taking classes, and I have a number of friends that are interested in med school, but are currently put-off my modern American entrance requirements. I do know that Mexico throws all the pre-med requirements out the window and one obtains more hands-on experience then here in the US, but you still have to export yourself down there and learn Spanish. Not my favorite option at the moment.

But if you could keep us informed on your findings of this school, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    feh henry baaboh

    Right on.

The Legal Charge D'Affairs for Vanguard University-Buea, Cameroon, Africa is FEH HENRY BAABOH.

Mr. Henry is a well respected lawyer with great prestige.

As you can read from this web-site, he was sent as a representative of Cameroon, Africa on this most delicate subject.

    read more here:

    http://www.biicl.org/index.asp?contentid=248

    Look where it reads :

Target Countries and the National Coordinators

Botswana - Kwame Frimpong, University of Botswana.

    Sierra Leone - Abdul Tejan-Cole, A Tejan-Cole & Associates.

Cameroon - Feh Henry Baaboh, Henry, Samuelson & Co .

There is also this description of each national coordinator on this same website:

Mr Feh Henry Baaboh is a practising barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Cameroon. Among the areas he practises he is also constituted by the Department of Public Prosecution to defend those who stand a chance of being sentenced to death and who are financially incapable of briefing counsel.

    Henry, Samuelson & Co
Immeuble Ndeke & fils Apt 109
    Rue des Manguiers Bali
    P O Box 15805 Akwa
    Douala
    Cameroon

Also, there is a link that describes each coordinators participation:

    http://www.biicl.org/index.asp?contentid=555

Vanguard University website (spanish) also lists the website of Mr. Baaboh as:

    http://www.henrysamuelson.com/staff.htm

Notice that it mentions the name of the clients of the firm. There sure enough is the name of Vanguard University; so it does have Cameroon representation.

From the spanish portion of the website it says it offers many different degree programs other than medicine.

I sent an email to be contacted to see what is this school all about.

Another interesting thing about this school is that I went to google and typed in the name of the lawyer (Feh Henry Baaboh) and this link appeared.

    http://www.business-international-costarica.com

On this link they have a english portion (very brief) but on the spanish portion they have much more details and there appears the name of the founders of the school and the name of Feh Henry Baaboh.

Seems they have a information office in Costa Rica, not a physical university.

Look at it and we can then compare what they respond in the email.

Ah Uncle Janko, did I hear you use past tense? It will take a lot of effort to get rid of me ;) .

The answer to the general question posed is both yes and no.

Yes, in the sense that there are several universities providing DL degrees outside South Africa.

No, in the sense that for someone outside the country in which the university operates, it is not practicable to register in the programs on offer because they are mainly text based and require some physical contact with University zonal representatives. For example the Open University of Tanzania does offer decent degree programs but I cannot (yet) see the it efficiently handling students from outside Tanzania.

Why, there you are! Good to hear from you. Nobody, least of all me, wants to see you disappear. Thanks for the update on DL in Tanzania.

Something I would like to see made available by African universities which would be of particular value to Americans are degree programs in African and African-diaspora history. Language training would be of great value to Americans as well. Having promoted an Africa-oriented US foreign policy for years, I think that American national interests will be better served by (eventually) American students availing themselves of on-site and DL opportunities from distinguished African universities. The South African DL enterprise is well-known and well-loved around here. Once, as you say, students can be handled efficiently, I hope there will be a great northward expansion of African DL. I won't name specific universities because I don't want to gore anybody's ox by omission, but I can think of quite a number whose degrees would carry considerable cachet here--and refute the damnable canard that all non-South Africa Africa (sic) has on offer in DL are mills. May the day come soon.

The sermon is ended. Go in peace.;)
