    Hey,

I have been investigating the "Board of Governor's" B.A. program and was wondering if anybody knew whether or not the 24 required semester hours from G.S.U. could be completed through Portfolio Assessment? This looks to be a very interesting program...... I'm short on money, though, and completing the 24 hours by Portfolio would be less expensive for me than through coursework.

    Cade,

I am at Northeastern Illinois, which also administers the Board of Governors B.A. program (as do several other state universities in Illinois). The residency requirement is 15 units, taken at any of the universities that offer the BOG program. Unfortunately, you cannot do portfolio in place of the residency units, they must be 15 units of "classes". The good news is that you can take distance learning courses to fulfill the residency requirements--you do not have to take on-campus courses. Other than the "big three" (Excelsior, Charter Oak and Thomas Edison), this is certainly one of the lowest residency requirements that you could find. The other good news is that you could complete a good portion of your degree via portfolio.

    Best of luck,

    Tony,

How many credit hours can you bring in through testing...
    ie:clep/dantes/tecep/ece?
    Is there a web site?

    Thank you in advance.

My info may be a bit dated, I was a counselor up to a year ago, but Gov State would take up to 80 credits non traditional (that is, military, clep, or whatever), but you have to meet the residency requirement with them.

It's 24 credits for all you civilians and 15 credits for Navy on sea duty (i.e., deployable status). The nice thing is they will allow you to transfer the remaining upper division courses ( of the 40 units) from any school that's accredited.

Remember, this is basically a degree completion program for individuals not having an intention of graduate study.

Since the Illinois Board of Governors disbanded, each of the five universities that administer the program have been allowed to make changes, although you can still meet residency requirements by taking course at any of the five institutions. Western Illinois seems to have modified the program the most, by changing the name of the degree to Board of Trustees and increasing the residency requirement to 30 units (the most of any of the five programs).

The residency requirements for the five participating universities are listed below:

Northeastern Illinois University - 15 units
Chicago State University - 15 units
Eastern Illinois University - 20 units
Governors State University - 24 units
Western Illinois University - 30 units

As far as I know, as long as you meet the residency and general ed requirements, you can earn your credits via CLEP, portfolio assessment, DANTES, ECE, etc.
