I am a 39 year old Brit currently living in Mexico and would like to study a Hospitality Management degree. Everything I've looked at so far specifies that you have to live in the States. Does anyone know any schools who would accept someone studying from a different country?

    Hi Carol,

Welcome to the board. You didn't specify which degree level in your post, so I assume you are interested in your bachelor's.

If you go to DegreeInfo.com's home page, and run a search through the database (using Bachelor's, and Tourism & Hospitality), you'll find several programs that don't require any residency.

Again, I'm assuming by your reference regarding living in the U.S. that it's a residency issue? If I'm mistaken, and the programs in the database don't suit, my apologies.

    Cheers,
    Adrienne

    Hello CarolH,

I am a Hotel General Manager in Denver, Colorado and I can only tell you my opinions based on being in the industry.

I have a A.A.S. degree from Johnson & Wales university...The hospitality university. you can visit them at:

    www.Jwu.edu

and I completed a Professional 6 course certification through Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration - A Ivy League University.

you can visit www.ecornell.com for info. You do not have to have a degree or pre-requisites to enroll via distance learning, but you do have to have a desire to learn.

I will tell you that the PDP program or master Certificate in Hospitality Management is highly reputable and carries with it alot of weight in this industry. It covers all of the key areas of the Hotel/Restaurant managerial aspects.

My additional advise is..experience is everything in this industry. Get a job learning in a good hotel invironment and highly consider the Cornell Certification thru Distance learning as a good option.

If you use the search function (wee button in upper right hnd corner) to look for threads with posts by John Spies, you will find some relevant information. He posted a lot about his search for such a program. IIRC, Queen Margaret College in Scotland and University of South Australia were two schools he investigated. Good luck.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Unfortunately, no luck on the search for hospitality degrees with no residency on the degreeinfo site. J and W don't seem to do online - is that right? Cornell sounds interesting, but I would really like to get a Bachelors first.

My situation is that I'm in Mexico probably for the next three years because of my husband's work and therefore have no work permit, so getting any experience is a no go. My kids have just gone into longer school hours, so am wondering what to do with myself in the mornings! As we are likely to keep moving country every few years, I need to find something that will help me get a job in whichever country we happen to be living - what better than the hotel/travel business. Any other suggestions from anyone on what to do would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

You say you don't know what to do in Mexico ?

    Hi, Carol

Have you thought about teaching English as a Foreign Language to Hospitality workers in Hotels and restaurants dealing mostly with tourists from the States, Canada, the U.K. .

You could contact the general managers and offer to teach ESL to interested workers in the hotels/restaurants.

It is a good way to get your feet wet in the Hospitality industry.

    Good luck

Yes, thanks, thats what I did in our last country (Guatemala). Unfortunately, Mexico is so big and so polluted that, because of the kids, we live a long way out of the centre (where all of the hotels are) and with traffic it would take me anything from 1 to 2 hours to get in, by which time I would have to turn around and come back just in time to pick up the kids! That, and the work permit, are the two major reasons that I can't work here. Hence, the idea of online studying.

    Online Associate degree in Hospitality

    Carol,
I understand your situation with the kids and the distance to travel to Mexico and the pollution.

May I suggest you send for information online with the following :

    www.educationdirect.com/hospmgmt/

You will read about an Associate degree in Specialized Business in Hospitality Management.

    Good luck!

Thanks a lot. That sounds great. I have sent off for the information brochure, lets just hope that it manages to get through the Mexican post!

Thanks very much, JR, unfortunately they ask for minimum five years experience in hospitality, which I do not have. I am still waiting for Education Direct's package, but from what they have sent me on the internet I think that is probably the one I will go for.
