Does anyone know anything about this school and its theology department? I was impressed by their web site.

The name certainly rings a bell, but I can't remember any details. Hrm.

    Tom,

    Here's the web site: http://www.sun.ac.za

If you decide to look it over, I'd be interested in your opinion.

Stellenbosch is generally regarded as one of the best South African universities. A truly beautiful campus in the heart of the wine country. I spent a short time there consulting with the psychology department, which was then designing research to study the impact of television on the country -- SA being one of the last countries on earth to allow television.

I like their different options for pursuing the MTh: specialized, structured, or research-- by dissertation only.

They have been very prompt in responding to me.

Defninately, a degree in theology from Stellenbosch would be one of the strongest theological credentials one could gain in South Africa (with all sincerity, definately among the top five theology departments in South Africa).

This would be a tremendous opportunity if indeed they are willing to allow you to study at a distance. Have they confirmed this?

As I mentioned in another strand, there are Stellenbosch graduates presently holding faculty positions in various reputable theology departments throughout North America. In fact, I would estimate that, apart from UNISA and Natal, Stellenbosch has more grads holding professorial positions in US theology departments than any other South African institution.

    CL,

They haven't exactly confirmed it, but they haven't denied it yet, either. They have been prompt, courteous, and helpful; I've been very impressed with them so far.

I don't think I can emphasize this enough: within the theological community, Stellenbosch is known and respected internationally. Their theology faculty is a first-rate outfit. It would be a tremendous opportunity for you if it worked out. This could very likely hold great promise for paving the way to a bright future for you.

In order to avert any potential disappointment, it sounds as though you would do well to get them to state precisely what their expectations are before you move any further in considering Stellenbosch. Is a complete non-residential degree possible? Will they expect on-campus residency? If so, how much? I'd hate to see you get your hopes up, only to be disappointed.

Can anyone update the information here about Stellenbosch? They have a grad theology program that looks very promising for my interests (MPhil & possible DPhil)l I'm specifically interested to know if anyone has done work via distance.

    Thanks.

They are a well respected, well ranked, old institution in a beautiful wine growing area of South Africa with what appears to be a good theology faculty. The main problem is that they are willing to negotiate but not budge on the residency. This means if you choose to do the program, you must go to South Africa at the beginning of it while you develop your thesis, etc. If that works for you it is likely an excellent choice.

No, that won't work for me. Thanks much for the help, Garp.

Wow, a thread has been resurrected after ten and a half years, and in a perfectly relevant way! I think that's a record for us! :-D

May I suggest South African Theological Seminary (SATS); kind, friendly, easy to work with, responsive, and have the same options for study as Stellenbosch. Good luck.

Yes, and to think, it wasn't resurrected by me -- amazing! :)

Thanks for the tip, Psydoc, and everyone who responded.

I've been looking at SATS for awhile, but my income seems to go down while the price of gettin by keeps going up. So cost is a concern. I'm in the middle of the M.R.S. at Nations now, but after that want to continue. Don't care about accreditation, since I don't plan to use it for employment... mostly for further writing/publishing.

I would like to applaud Working Man for actually using the search function. We get so many people who ask the same questions that have been discussed repeatedly, but this is a great example of someone who digs in to find the info and once the existing material is covered, if there are still questions, is able to ask, resurrecting the old thread, so as to keep context.

But yeah, 10 years old. That was even before I joined and I've been around a long time.
