What do you think about AMU

I recently enrolled in AMU (American Military University) which is a part of APUS and ACC. After a lot of research I decided to do it. They have a ton of programs there. The question is; AMU is DETC accredited, however they are a candidate with a Regional accreditor. When I'm all done at AMU and if they had earned the RA will my credits be considered RA or NA or both. I have studied at other DETC schools and have had no problems and enjoy the course work. So I'm not against any DETC school, but it would be nice if I was also receiving RA credits.

    Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question about NA or RA...I think that your degree will follow the accreditation status of AMU at the time it is awarded but I could be wrong.

However, AMU does have another distinction. It offers a joint Masters program with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a federal academy with a world-wide reputation for excellence.

If AMU receives RA before your degree is awarded, you will have a NA and RA degree.

The only other school I can think of that was both DETC and RA (College for Financial Planning) let their DETC accreditation lapse after receiving RA.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping that it would be RA. That makes me all the more motivated.

I enrolled at AMU in August 2004 and have found the degree programme in which I am studying, AA (Counterterrorism Fundamentals) to be interesting. I will later study towards the BA (Intelligence Studies) but one step at a time.

    Opinion from existing students

For those who are enrolled at AMU, can you tell me a little about how a class works? Are the 8 week classes the same material as the 15 week classes, just more intense? Is there a lot of online discussion? How are the professors about responding?

I'm am planning on enrolling in the MA in history but am trying to decide when and for what class.

The 8-week format is very intense and according to the Course Study Guide for the English composition course in which I am currently enrolled we cover the same material in a shorter time period. I personally find the 8-week format preferable as it helps keep me from procrastinating.

AMU/APU/ACC/APUS is in the process of updating the marking scheme for some courses. As a result the turnaround between submitting an assignment and receiving feedback and grading may be longer than usual. Though with 8-week courses I can only hope any delays are minimal during the transition. A previous course had excellent turnaround time by the professor - he would ensure the assignments were graded with comments usually within a few days of submission and definately within 1 week on the outside.

The classes are primarily self-study with assigned assignments and due dates. Some courses utilise a newsgroup-style participatory facility. The instructors use email as the primary means of communication (all students are provided with an APUS email account that is accessible from within the classroom). A benefit of studying at this institution is the books are provided free to undergraduate students, but post-graduate students have to purchase their books.

You will probably enjoy studying at AMU.

You must take RC576 'Historical Research Methods' as the FIRST course in your MA History programme. This course will give you a fell for online distance learning at AMU. Good luck with your studies.

"Must" as in AMU recommends it first or must as in you think it would be best to get the feel? I haven't seen anything about which class AMU recommends to take first. I know this one is required but was leaning toward something easier to start with, like a WWII class or History of Culture. The books are cheaper for those classes, which means I'm not out as much if I don't like it.

    AMU

    Deb:

AMU requires that you take the research methods class for your master's degree within your first two semesters.

Hope that helps! The class isn't really that bad. I had Dr. Kostman this semester, and he was very helpful as a professor, compared to most online courses I have taken.

    Semester

    Thanks JassenB.

The class sounded interesting but the books came to $180 whereas the books for the culture class only came to $45. Being my first DL class I wanted to ease in.

How does AMU count a semester? I was going to take one class from Feb - May (16 weeks) then maybe try an eight week class in June and August. So, the one in June would have to be the research class?

The person I talked to about applying only explained that you can register for up to 3 classes at the same time as you apply. Think I'll give her another call and ask about which classes I can take within the first year.

I notice that AMU has scholarships for members of the National Sheriff's Association, and also for American Society of Industrial Security members.

Does anyone know anything about these scholarships and requirements for them? Does one just have to be a member of one of these organizations and therefore automatically receive the scholarship or is there competition? What is the amount of the scholarship?

    thanks,
    clint

    Re: Semester

Well, AMU semesters are switching to 16 week from 15 week, and they start a new semester on the first Monday of every month, so I'm not really sure how they count a semester. I am taking classes that overlap semesters in a staggered pattern.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
