Well after alot of research I have finaly decided on Penn State to start my distance education. Although I have been mainly a lurker on this board I feel almost like I know everyone, hehe. Id like to really thank Dr Bear for his book, its been my bible through the ordeal. I'll post my experience with Penn State on the board as time goes, hopefully it will be a good one. Vex
Congratulations on starting the process. So many people never do. Once I surveyed buyers of my book six months after the purchase. About 15% had begun a program, 10% had decided not to do it, and 75% were still thinking it over. Just musing. Maybe things have changed, but when I went to the Penn State campus years ago, I was told that it was the state university that was farthest from a commercial airport. Wonder if that was a factor in their major move into distance learning?
Hey, cool -- are you from Starkpatch yourself? You're right; they're floating somewhere between Jackson and Memphis, and probably a good three hours away from either. As a former Happy Valley resident (and PSU grad student), I can claim to have flown in/out of the State College airport several hundred times over the past 10 years. While it's no LAX or DFW, it does have a number of high quality prop-driven planes and I believe they've begun using smaller-sized regional jets there as well. As for their "major" effort into DL, I'd question that assessment given the relatively small number of degrees offered (only an MS in Education, as I recall and no BS/BA degree from PSU via DL). Never the less, I do have a soft spot in heart for PSU and applaud their support and promotion of DL.
Bob: Penn State does indeed have a BA completion program available via distance education; it is the Bachelor of Arts degree in Letters, Arts, and Sciences. And (this is more what I had in mind) PSU publishes the major US journal in the field of distance education, and runs one of the two major news forums (which is either DEOS, Distance Education Online Service, or AEDnet, Adult Education Network, but I can never remember which, and am 650 miles from home so I can't quickly look it up).
