This post is in response to another on degreeinfo regarding VA benefits and DL. Presently the only DL that might accept VA benefits seems to be Concord. Unfotunately their Bar pass rate is 0%. By comparison, Oakbrook had a higher pass rate than many of the ABA Law programs, and the highest among DL law programs. Oakbrook mentioned that if enough Veterans write about VA benefits, they would look into obtaining VA approval.

It would be beneficial if Degreeinfo members would write Oakbrook and ask about this, we might be able to motivate them to get VA benefits. While this will only benefit Veterans, the entire DL community would benefit by the additional exposure, credibility of the entire DL approach. It would also be a nice thing to do for our veterans who have served our country. Thanks to you all :)

here's a link to ask about VA benefits:

    I'm All For It!!

I think that this is a good idea...writing Oakbrook, but we shouldn't stop there; someone should organize a group that supports DL Law Schools and begin a campaign of writing the ABA and doing the legwork to see if we could get a DL school to reach some type of status that is recognized...beyond DETC.

    My two cents

    Good point

    Hey Mike,
That's a good idea. Maybe some of the lawyers who frequent this board might know what strategy will be most effective.

I remember awhile back, a DegreeInfo reader was having a problem with his AIU degree. Very quickly, they changed their policy about the way their degrees are worded. While the ABA is not as likely to embrace this change easily, if at all, it would warrant the effort.

Why don't we start the ABA petition for DL Law schools right here. I volunteer to be a part of it if anyone is interested. Let's think of a name, get it incorporated and recruit former DL law school graduates that have passed the bar. They have more of a vested interest in this cause and should pony up some funds to get this started.

    What do you guys think?

Sounds good to me, I wouldn't know where to begin, but if you do, lets rock!

To be fair, Concord students do pass the Baby Bar and Bar and become lawyers. Their success rate isn't really zero.

    Iquagmire...

Bless you for volunteering to spearhead the campaign, but you know that it will be an arduous task to get it off the ground...and a monumental amount of work! But, I think that anything worth doing is worth the amount of effort required to get it going. I am willing to help in whatever fashion necessary!

Maybe one of us could post a thread in the form of a poll and get people to check off whether they want to get involved, or if its even worth it...and that will give us a metric we can use to build from.

I'm not sure where to start - so if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!

I've always wanted to go to law school and took the LSAT last year. But with a family, work and the tuition amount I just didn't see it happening - Even Nova's part time evening program is taxing (M-Th from 6pm -10pm for four years). I got my BBA online and I'm getting my MIBA online. Self-Study is not a problem for me and I am passionate about that. That's my rant.

I hope we can convince the ABA to loosen their restrictions, or maybe hit up a few states (like Florida) to allow DL law graduates to sit for their bar in a lesser amount of time. Florida requires 10 years of active practice which seems a bit excessive.
