    Hi everyone!

Well, I have decided that I am going to take CLEP Macroeconomics, CLEP Microeconomics, DANTES Human Resource Management, and DANTES Principles of Statistics in the near future. I have already purchased study materials for the CLEP tests; does anyone have any recommendations for study material for the DANTES tests? I've never taken a DANTES test before -- are they timed? What can I expect?

    Thanks!

    Sara

P.S. How does statistics compare with algebra?

  2. Hi Sara,

I highly recommend the Standard Deviants tapes - they cover economics (which you may not need), statistics, accounting and more. Do a search on eBay and you may be able to pick them up cheap. If you need some more help with micro or macro their tapes are pretty good for these as well. My site has some additional thoughts that I posted for these exams.

DANTES are not timed, although there's probably an ultimate limit imposed by the test center (i.e. not taking 4 hours on a single exam). They are also pencil and paper, fill-in-the-bubble, and have 4 valid answers instead of CLEP's 5.

For DANTES HR, I purchased one of the recommended textbooks on half.com. I find that there are a lot of books where the next-to-latest edition can be available for as little as $10 instead of $120 for the shiny new latest version - and often the change is only a few words here and there and a new chapter that may not be on the exam anyway.

As far as the difference between stats and algebra, it's kind of like chalk and cheese - quite different. Statistics is about making inferences about samples from a population through the use of tools (standard deviation, mean/median/mode, z-scores, etc.). This is obviously an oversimplification ;)

    Cheers,
    Mark

I highly recommend the official dsst study guide-amazon has it.
I passed just using that book. Some of the sample questions in the book were on the exam as well.

You might want to check your library. My local library had 2 copies of the book!

I used the DSST official study guide for Personal Finance and passed- it covered the topics on the exam BUT not in the depth that was needed...

Used it for Personal Finance, Org Behavior and Ethics in america as well.
Passed them all using the book. Wish they covered more subjects

    Hi, Sara.

I cannot recommend the standard deviants tapes only because they are too strange for me. Statistics is, to me, a very dry and sober topic. The standard deviants tapes I watched are chock full of whizbang eye candy stuff that I find very distracting. I suppose if one had a background in statistics and need a refresher, they would be ok, but as I watched these tapes I kept thinking of the people on this forum who used these tapes to pass (and not pass) the DSST statistics exam, and wondered "How in the blue hell did they ever pass with these things?". However, they do seem complete in their content. I just get distracted by the presentation.

Anyhow, I am on the hunt for a good book to help me get a good overview of statistics so the parts I do understand can have a place to live within the big picture that I seem to need. I'll share whatever I find out with you.
