And so the journey begins. I finally got my transcripts from my old school and had the local community college add the credits that will work towards my AA. I need to take the following CLEPS to receive my AA :

    Comp w/Essay
    General Bio, Chem. Natual Sci.
    American History I
    American Gov
    Analying Lit

I can't belive I am so close to just getting that. I know its only an AA but no one in my family has graduated from college. It means alot to me to be the first so I am shooting for graduating in may. Of course my main goal is the BS and then on to my MBA. I am really gratefull for finding this group. I don't think I would have moved in the direction I am headed in without the guidance that has been given to me. If anyone has taken those clep tests ANY information on what you used to study would be greatly appreciated. The one I am really concerned with is COMP w/Essay. I would really like to test out of English all together.

    Thank you to everyone.

And to everyone that has recently gotten their degrees congrats.

    Continuing on

Well I hope that everyone is doing well with their on going educations. It took me forever to finally take my first clep but I have 9 credit hours

    US History I
    American Gov
    Information Systems

I kept procrastinating - mostly out of fear that I would fail. But it turned out that I was making a mountain out of a molehill. I am getting ready now to take my Biology test - Which seems like quite a bit since I am using instacerts database - has over 800 questions. My plan is to hopefully graduate with my associates in May from a local Community College though that is more for my family than for me - since I will be going for my BA through Excelsior. Big thanks to everyone that has helped me.

    Re: Continuing on

I took the Gov CLEP and failed, I guess I did not use the right book to prepare.

The History was a snap. I used the REA book. It was great.

I took the DANTES Intro to Computers and it was really easy, I have my MCSE.
    Good luck.

    Question

Boy do I feel kind of dumb right about now. I was going through some of the old posts in here and just realized that I wasn't taking the clep practice questions first to determine where I am at and studying the areas I am weak in --> Translation taking more time and giving myself more work than I needed to. While I do enjoy using instacert I think there are other tools which will help me out more. So hopefully some members read this and can give me some feedback. I was planning on taking the sample questions for the Biology test next. Then assessing where it is I need to work. And going from there. Should I study a text book? What should I study once I know the areas that I need work on?

    Carlos,

When studying for CLEP's, I try to get either an old edition of a college textbook, or a relatively cheap "review" book from a local bookstore. If you're near a college, you might be able to find an old edition of a biology text for $5 or so at a used bookstore. If you have a good idea of what you're missing, you can just look it up in the index. Otherwise, I'd skim the table of contents and the chapter summaries, see what looks familiar, and see what is absolutely foreign. Work a couple of the end of chapter problems, and if the answers are in the back of the book, check your work, and see how you did. Just keep revising until you are relatively comfortable with the material. Then, take the test. When it asks if you want to see your score, ALWAYS say yes. It's not like you will be able to walk in there tomorrow and retest (you have to wait six months whether you see your score or not), and no matter how down you feel at the end of the test, you might have passed anyway. I know I felt like I bombed several CLEPs at the end, but I never failed one! Best of luck with CLEP Biology!

Carlos, here's some websites that might help if you haven't already seen them:

The Free University Project- lots of CLEP info and study material:

    http://www.freeuniv.com/

Non-stop English - free grammar tests. There are different skill levels to the tests making this site useful whether English is a first language or a second. (Read descriptions, choose a test by clicking the two-tone blue arrows on the right)

    http://www.nonstopenglish.com/

Bibliomania - free online literature and study guides:

    http://www.bibliomania.com/

    Literature analysis help:

    http://www.pinkmonkey.com/

You've probably seen this one but in case you haven't,
Free tutorials & practice tests, test tips for all 34 CLEP exams:

    http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/prep.html

Buying used text books is a good idea as others have suggested. If you can get hold of instructor's editions of previously used editions so much the better. Instructor's versions have all the answers to chapter exercises so you can test yourself.

Best wishes to you, and please stop telling yourself "it's just an associate's degree". It's a college degree, and as it will be the first in your family it has to be just as exciting for them as it is for you! Keep everyone here posted on your progress.

Thank you Kit. Not only for those links - which alot of them I haven't seen. But for helping me keep prespective on my "associates". I know its a big deal I just wish I would have known some of this information sooner - I guess we all say that about something though. Thank you. If you ever need any help fixing your credit let me know ( goes for everyone ). I am a wiz at it. Only offering since its one of the good things I know about that can really have a big impact. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Have a great day. Happy Holidays to everyone.

I was the first in my family (thanks to them, not to me) who had the chance to go to college. I agree that the associate's is an honorable and worthy degree whether it's a stand-alone or a stepping stone. Should have included this in the earlier post but didn't. So best wishes again.
