I can understand why this wouldnt be *too* likely of a potential avenue for pursuing one's degree in a scientific field, but I'm wondering if it's possible to get portfolio evaluation for, or to be able to challenge, a scientific course with specific lab requirement?

For example, I have pretty extensive knowledge of organic chemistry, but only through non-traditional education (basically, a huge interest in the science, not enough money for the courses, and a generous teacher willing to let me use his lab on his off-time).

Is there anyway I could "challenge" a lab course through TESC/COSU/etc. (Athabasca specifically mentions such lab-based courses as non-challengeable), if so, how would that be arranged? Would there be some arrangements made with a local school for me to access a lab to demonstrate my knowledge?

The Royal Society of Chemistry used to have practical examinations which you could have done but these have been discontinued (in the late 80's).

The only other ones I have heard of are by the Open University in the UK. The lab based courses are now seperate from the taught courses so the Organic Chemistry practical (1 week residential) could be done seperately. Don't think you would be able to just sit a test for those though. You would have to sit the entire weeks course.
