I just wanted to let everyone know that they can, with authority, point out that folks getting their education by distance means do have peer-reviewed publications . . . like me! I have had an encyclopedia chapter accepted for publication next year that went through the double-blind, peer-review process. Woo-hoo! Needless to say, I'm a tad excited. I've published before, but this is my first peer-reviewed, so while it is descriptive rather than empirical, I feel this bit of writing has been validated at a higher level than my earlier work. The title is "Educational technology in the Middle East: Building knowledge, shaping society". It will be found in the Encyclopedia of International Computer-based Learning, which is Volume 2 of the 4-volume Encyclopedia of Distance Learning, being published in April 2005 by Idea Group Publishing. To see the cover: http://www.idea-group.com/encyclopedia/details.asp?ID=4456 Unfortunately, I won't be able to buy a copy, as it's close to $1000, but at least I'll get a pdf copy w/ the table of contents! Woo-hoo! Thanks for letting me share my excitement! Cheers, Adrienne
Congrat's! Peer reviewed pub's are a lot of work... but worth it! BruceP PS: Couldn't help but notice your location... I was stationed at the Air Base outside of Al Ain during the end of Desert Storm. Al Ain is a beautiful city and the shopping was great too!
Adrienne, My heartiest congratulations--this is a notable achievement. It sounds like a wonderful presentation for AECT as well (hint, hint). Very often, those who are editing new publications and are looking for articles or chapters will scout for prospects at the conferences. Are you still planning to atten AECT this fall? Tony Pina Faculty, Cal State U. San Bernardino To avoid being rude to everyone else: The Association for Educational Communications & Technology (AECT) is the leading professional association and conference for instructional design & technology. AECT's fall conference is in Chicago this year http://www.aect.org
Hi Tony, Thanks for your congrats! Unfortunately, no, I won't be at AECT this fall. I've been chosen for a newly-created managerial HR position at my university, which I'm taking up next month, and the requirements of that position will preclude me from going to Chicago. To be honest, as it is, I'll be flying back to the U.S. at least three times, at a minimum, in the next year, for my Ph.D. residency work and recruiting duties for UAEU; it's such a heinous flight, that I'm not all that willing to add even more to the itinerary at this point! Gah -- I'm getting old (or, more likely, in dire need of first-class travel . . . 30 hours in transit by economy class is murderous!). I will, however, consider submitting my article as a presentation for next fall -- that would probably be a better time for me. Cheers, Adrienne
Thanks, Bruce! Yes, I love Al-Ain, too; it's a perfect size, minimal traffic (compared to Abu Dhabi or Dubai), quiet, small, but certainly close enough to Abu Dhabi or Dubai for major shopping expeditions, although we now have two respectable malls. I'm afraid most of the gold vendors in the UAE know me by name. Cheers, Adrienne
Congratulations, Adrienne. You keep this stuff up, and one day you could get one o' them fabled higher docs by previously published work.
