I am in the Military, registered and enrolled in TESC, will begin taking the American History 1 class on August 1. I have applied to take a TESC exam. Based on information on thier website, enrolled students pay 62.00 per credit hour. Now, math has not been my strong suite, I actually almost failed high school algebra. But that equates to 186.00 per test, they want 180.00 per hour for those things, 540.00 bucks for 1 test.

    Anyone know why?

Also, does anyone know of a school that does true independent study, TESC Takes 16 weeks to complete the online courses and Adams State College wants 12. I would like to start knocking these independent study courses out. I have 8 more months in Iraq, I want to leave with a degree.

    Thanks

Hi there, Linuxman ... nice name. ;)

Under the "Enrolled Options Plan", yes, it is $62 per credit attempted, so for a three credit TECEP, it would come to $186 for a standard TECEP exam worth 3 credit hours.

I think you are multiplying the $186 X 3 again, which you don't need to do. The exams are $186, not $558.

By the way, don't forget that your military training can likely be turned into credits with TESC through ACE/AARTS. Even a crusty old tank gunner like me ended up with 15 free elective credits!

    Cheers.

That is exactly what I thought after reading the email from TESC. They have got to be making a mistake! Nope it has been confirmed, anyone in the MDCP program has to pay 180.00 per credit hour.

They said it was because I did not hae to pay registration and yearly fees, that seemed pretty strange since they billed my credit card for the 75.00 registration fee.

I would have used SCOman or TRUman but how many people would have understood that?

Are you enrolled as a student?

If you are not an enrolled student, it appears the fee per credit hour attempted is $124, which would bring the fee for a 3 credit exam to $368, which is still less than $540.

Are they breaking those charges down as $186 per credit hour, or in some other way? Perhaps it is an accumulation of all charges, including the exam fee?

I'm struggling to understand why they would make it more expensive for people in the military degree completion program...

Actually, a last minute update here. I'm looking at their web site. Specifically, this page:

    http://www.tesc.edu/prospective/undergraduate/tuition.php

    At the bottom, they state:

Perhaps that is where they are getting the $180 per credit hour from.

What is the big draw for being in the MDCP? Do they waive initial tuition or something? If there is no big benefit, I would consider dropping it and just enrolling as a normal non-military student.

By the way, if you aren't familiar with the CLEP exams, you should check them out. Easier and cheaper (by far) than the TECEPS, and TESC accepts them.

    Lol. :)

    Cheers.

I'm not familiar with their program, but are you enrolled in a course, or just taking the test? It sounds like the $180 per credit hour is for taking an entire course - with materials set up to help you learn the material.

If you already know the material, you would test out and pay just a test fee, not a course fee.

As four other schools, there are plenty of them. What you're looking for is correspondence self-paced classes. I took a couple from Brigham Young (BYU), and was able to finish the main part of the classes very quickly (as in, once I was enrolled, each class had 8 or 9 lessons which I finished in a few days). Then I had to arrange for a proctor and request the exams - your longest wait might be for the exams to arrive. The classes I took had mintiple choice "speedback" assignments which I could submit online, so they were graded instantly. I'm taking the finals tomorrow, also multiple choice. They will be computer graded, and results should be available a couple of days after BYU gets them back from my proctor.

Other than that, you might consider Dantes exams which you might be able to take over there, as well as the CLEP exams.
