DL Ph.D in IT or MIS or Computer Science

Hi all,

Can you please let me know which University offers Ph.D in IT or MIS or Computer Science meeting the following criteria.

Factors I am looking for.

1. Should be Regionally Accredited University
2. Should be 100% DL. ( No residency requirement )
3. Should be cost effective ( I am paying on my own )
4. I have BS in Electronics and MBA.
5. Should be flexible enough.

Several of us are attending Northcentral University.

While it meets all your criteria it is fairly new and still growing. Mixed reviews but has been fine for me. If you could tell us what you plan to do with the degree there may be better options.

Cost effective is relative but with NCU you can pay by course rather than by a quarter or semester so it may fit your budget better.

I don't have first hand knowledge of the other programs so I'll let others offer their opinions/

Nova Southeastern University

Type: Private/Non-Profit
Accreditation: Regional - Southern Associate of Colleges and Schools
Residencies: Require orientation day at first institute orr custer session. Meets on campus 2 weeks per year.
Addmission: Appropriate regionally accredited master's with 3.25 GPA, essay, summary of professional experience and 3 letters of evaluation.
Degree: Ph.D in Information Systems

Ph.D in Management of Information Systems
Ph.D in Education Computing Technology in Education
Tuition: $445.00 per credit ($28,480.00 for the whole degree)

University of Idaho
Engineering Outreach
Type: Public/Non-Profit
Accreditation: Regional - Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Computer Science Accreditation Commission of the Computing Sciences.
Residencies: Students take final year of coursework on campus.
Admission: Master degree
Degree: Doctor of Science in Computer Science
Tuitioin: $444 per credits ($34,632.00 plus addiontal fees for Doctor degree)
Degree Requirement: 78 Semester Hours

If you choose Nova Southeastern University, your criteria #2 and #5 will not be met. Nova's PhD programs are highly structured and they also have residency requirements. Pace University offers a DPS (Doctor of Professional Studies) in Computing that is complete DL; however, it is very expensive. $50,000.00 for the entire program!

BTW, both Nova and U. of Idaho require residencies. U. of Idaho requires you to be on campus for two semesters to complete the PhD.

 

My bad -- Pace requires on campus visits once per month (this is even more frequent than Nova!)

 

Another option is the IT Management option in the DBA program at Nova Southeastern. This can work if you have a more general interest in business as well as IS. Yes, the DBA program at Nova requires residency - as does the PhD in CIS or CS from SCIS unit of Nova.

But think about your residency expectation. There are some definite benefits of having face to face time with peers and faculty. Each person's learning style is different - for me, I really enjoyed residency time.

I am still trying to figure out the University which satisfies all my factors.

I understand that there are benefits of residency, but I am not in a position to spend time/money on that.

As I am not able to find in IT/MIS/Computer Science field, I am leaning towards Ph.D in BA ( Applied Computer Science concentration ) in Northcentral University. But I am still open to suggestions which meets all my factors mentioned above.

If you want a PhD - find the least onerous residency and just do it.

The biggest headache with this program is that it is taught by a consortium of 5 schools and you have to be accepted into each. More paperork than anything else. I explored this option but the fields (concentrations) are limited.

 

You may want to look at the DBA program I am enrolled in at Grenoble. The school is very strong in technology management and every DBA dissertation has to have a technology management component. Grenoble is also the “silicon valley” of France, which gives you an excellent opportunity to network with IT professionals in the EU. I have an unofficial student FAQ on the program at:
