    Hello Everyone,

You know, I took CLEP General: English Composition w/ Essay. And I missed by 1 point. I would like to know which of the following exam is easier than another?

    CLEP: English Composition w/ Essay
CLEP: Freshman English Composition w/ Essay
    Excelsior: English Composition
TECEP: English Composition I & II

Would you please give me an opinion from your experience.

    Thank you very much.

Comparing the CLEP, "English Composition with Essay", to the ECE, "English Composition" :-

The CLEP exam is a hybrid of objective testing and essay assessment. The ECE exam comprises a 3-essay assessment. You are given 90 minutes to complete the CLEP exam and three hours to complete the Excelsior College exam. The CLEP exam is much easier than the ECE exam. This has nothing at all to do with either exam's content and much to do with the capricious nature of the marking of the ECE English Composition exam. In this respect, many it seems, have suffered as a result of Excelsior’s incompetence.

Both of these exams purport to provide a measure of freshman-level written English competence. I scored above the 97th percentile in the CLEP exam, but a letter grade “C” in the ECE exam. I know I performed better in the ECE exam than in the CLEP exam. I had rested well before the ECE test, and the quality and relevance of my written work that day was keener than usual. My essay submission in the CLEP exam was below par. I do not think it possible these two exams were marked using the same benchmark.

I believe both exams could be used to estimate a candidate’s competence at the designated level. I suspect the CLEP examiners do just that. I think Excelsior would profit from an official review, some honest introspection, and a firing of someone’s ass.

Bottom line: if you can (i.e. you are not an Excelsior student), take the CLEP “English Composition with Essay” in preference to the ECE English Composition exam.
