I'm interested in the Thd. degree from unizul. However, my master's did not have a thesis component; it was designed to prepare a student for doctoral level course work. Will this keep me out of the program? Here is my theological background: B.A. in theology from Belmont Abbey College(1989), M.A.R. in systematic theology from Yale Univ. Divinity School(1991), 42 credit hours (as well as a year of reading and research for comps) in the Phd. program at the dept. of theology at Boston College(1991 - 1995). If you can give me some sound advice about unizul, i'll be greatly appreciative.

P.S. Thank you for replying to my earlier inquiry about unizul fees

Actually my name is Grover, not Glover.

Please understand that I can only interpret for you my copy of the UZ regs. I have no authority to speak for Unizul. You should really address your questions to Bobby Loubser the Dean of that Dept. If cost is an issue, I think tuition soon will go up--as it should! It really is very inexpensive now.

Unlike some US ThD programs, as The Master's Seminary, which requires the four year RA or ATS ThM as a prereq, Unizul will admit one into the DTh with only a MA sort of masters. However, Unizul does require the prereq for both for the D Phil and the DTh of a prior "scientific" thesis (they say dissertation). This evidences the applicant's ability to do independent research which is vtal for such a program.

However, it may be possible to do that prior thesis with Unizul in a year and then formally be admitted into the DTh. One could even (although I didn't) elicit from the thesis a direction, and build on that foundation, for the DTh dissertation. Again see what Loubser says.

    Good "luck,"

    Go ahead and apply.

I know of one instance for certain where an applicant was admitted to UZ with similar amounts of masters-level coursework/degree status but no master's thesis. One warning: these folks are, um, dilatory/comatose about responding to status inquiries. You must, must, must, poke, prod, and harry them to get stuff done and badger them into getting whatever story they tell you straight.

If you can see the entry process through, I suspect you will be pleased with the place.

I do not know what it is like now but a couple of years ago I was able to enrol in the DTh program (practical theology) with a Masters degree and *no* thesis.

I can't contest the understanding of Janko or North. Yet the present description of the program at the website says,

"Previous studies must include a scientific dissertation with above average marks."

I did have above average marks :) and maybe it helped that I mentioned the school I graduated from was well ranked (sent the link) or the fact that mine was in practical theology rather than Systematic Theology. But I was accepted without the thesis issue.

I cannot wait to congratulate you Bill on receiving your doctorate. You will be our first UNIZUL grad. They do have memorabilia and one time I asked Dr. Song about it but he said a group of American had come through on a tour and cleaned out the campus store of anything with UNIZUL on it so they were in the process of reordering. I had wanted a bumper sticker or mug. Actually, UNIZUL's crest is very dignified and English looking.

On another note, does anyone know what happened to Bill Highsmith. He had been enrolled and had a unique agreement between two different departments at UNIZUL for joint supervision.
