    Hey,

I finally decided, a few weeks ago, to go ahead and enroll at Excelsior College....where I would earn a B.S. in Liberal Studies. The flexibility of the program is great (which all of you already are aware of) and I transferred in a total of 72 credits...but quickly earned twelve additional credits on the Freshman College Composition and the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP's. Currently, I have those 84 credits (all lower-level) but I'm taking Introduction To Leadership Concepts, Leadership and Personal Development, and Descriptive Astronomy this semester (all of which are upper-level). Those will each be good for 9 more credits. Some have suggested taking the BYU courses in Education (which have no finals) to get some quick credit hours. Since Education is an interest of mine in the future, I think I'll likely do that. Hey, credit is credit, right? :)

Now, though, I've come across the problem of declaring a major. While I initially planned on earning the Liberal Studies major (and still may), I've recognized the flexibility of the program and think I would enjoy concentrating my study on one subject. Even though my Associate's Degree is in Business, I don't really think I want to take the business route again. As I've told people of my enrollment at Excelsior, it seems as if they all ask the same question... "and what are you majoring in"? So, I'd like to pick a major....not because of other people (but because it's something I really want to do). I have the most of my knowledge in Literature, Chemistry, and Physics (from interest during free-time in the past). I have no Chemistry credit. I have 9 hours of Literature Credit...all lower-level, and 7 hours of Physics credit (one the Descriptive Astronomy class is complete) for 3 lower-level credits, a lower-level lab credit, and 3 upper-level credits. I'm not really comfortable taking the GRE for either of these two, although I guess it's something I could quickly attempt. I feel I would benefit from the portfolio process on these three subjects. I know it's not the quickest route out there, but I think it's the most comfortable route for me. One person had suggested to me (who wasn't with Excelsior...but had went through the portfolio process in the past) that I enroll at Governor's State University and go through their Portfolio Process...and have the credits transferred back to Excelsior. I will contact my advisor before making this decision to be sure of it's acceptance, but what do you guys think of this? And any other suggestions for credit?

My suggestion is to choose a subject that you enjoy and take as many exams as possible, and then take independent study courses to fulfill the remaining requirements. If you enjoy literature, you have plenty of testing and independent study options to complete your degree. And I'd at least consider the GRE. Good luck.

And don't forget, you can keep the BSL and choose a focus which allows 30 semester hours in one subject.

    Cade-

I'd take physics exams via Ohio University. Get the (upper level) credit you deserve, and go for it!

Fill in (other subjects) as needed....
(Does OU have chem to test out...I don't know.)

And nothing prevents you from blending your favorite subjects (in Liberal Arts) - do lit, chem, and physics!

    Keep it up!

Enough of this education stuff. More important is whether you are Bowtie, Oval or Ram. :)

Have you any future educational plans regarding the science courses? The 3-credit liberal arts versions of those courses may not suffice for advanced study.

Most of my credits for my BSLS are in engineering - some listed as science and the rest listed as electives. When I applied for grad school it was not a problem that I had no major, only ythat I had enough math and engineering credits on my transcript.

    Wish me luck.....

I've been accepted by Governor's State University and told I was a wonderful canidate for portfolio assessment. This was the plan I had thought of all along (as I would transfer those portfolio credits back to Excelsior). I have all the documentation I need....now it's time to start on some writing, I suppose.

P.S. Anybody got any suggestions on what to write for English Literature portfolios?
