    Hi Everyone,
I think that I will be pursuing a master's in education at Nova Southeastern U. Has anybody here graduated or attends NSU? I will apprecuate any feedback about your feelings on their online programs. They say that I could obtain my degree in one year. They offer eight weeks sessions with two classes at the time.

    Feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Aldo

    Hi Aldo,

First off, Nova Southeastern University is properly accredited as an institution. It is accredited by Southersn Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

I received my master's degree and PhD in CIS from Nova Southeastern University. My NSU experience was memorable and enlightening. Many of the professors in the School Computer and Information Sciences (SCIS) have published several books that a popular among American college students and practitioners in the IT industry. Some of the books that were published by current and former SCIS professors include C – How to Program, C++ - How to Program, Java – How to Program, Visual Basic – How to Program (all by Dr. Deitel), Building Broadband Networks (by Dr. Kemper-Littman), The Schemer's Guide to Solid Modeling, Computational Geometry and Computer Graphics in C++, and Object-Oriented Programming featuring Graphical Applications in Java (all by Dr. Laszlo).

Overall, my degrees from Nova have served me well. My graduate degrees have opened many doors for me with repect to college teaching opportunities. I graduated from Nova but Unfortunately, I don't know much about Fischler Graduate School of Education.

Thanks Ike. That is a great start as far as information. I can only assume that they would hold those high standards for all their departments. Thanks for your input.

    Hi
As previously mentioned NSU is regionally accredited. I completed my undergrad with them via distance learning and in my opinion it was pretty good experience.

    Ajredaelli:

I am working on my Ed.D. with Nova and my wife is finishing her masters in Elem. Edu. with them so we have plenty of experience with the graduate school of education. The master program can be completed in a year if you take two classes per term. At some point you may have to take three classes (because of the practicum requirement). It just depends on the major you choose and how often they offer most of the classes. (i.e. In the Elem. Edu. program they only offer the Science class every three semesters so my wife had to plan accordingly.) Most classes are offered every term though.

If you choose Nova, my advice would be to get the research and "no credit" classes out of the way first. They are always used as building blocks for your other classes. The no credit classes include EDU 5000 which is a very simple technology class that teaches you to use the Nova website, webct, and the Internet. EDU 602 and 602 are your portfolio classes. You have to build a portfolio of your work and relate it to Florida standards...these classes assist you with that. My wife took some of these no credit classes when she was taking two others so even though she was only taking 6 credits that term, she actually had 3-4 classes. (make sense?)

The program does go fast but it has been a good experience for my wife. When you enroll you are assigned an advisor that stays with you throughout the program. As with most schools getting answers from them in like pulling teeth but be persistent and document everything. Other then a few minor headaches, we have not had any major problems.

If you have any other questions, just let me know

    Hey Duff,
You seem to have good info for me. Wpuld you mind sending me an email at [email protected]?

One of my concerns is that they seemed to be a little obscure on information. The school seems good, but I've heard horror stories about schools misguiding students sometimes. Having said that, my only concern is how difficult it is to get answers ... you answered that for me.
They claim, as you said, that the master's can be obtained in a year or less. Assuming that I work hard, which I do, is that type of load overwhelming or is it manageable? Also, do they have a "virtual" classroom with posting requirements for each week?

I assume that you are in Florida and so am I. Please email me so I can "pick" your brain some more. I am struggling with my decision a little bit ... too many schools and too many promises ;)

Several colleagues of mine (mostly K-12 educational leaders) have received masters or doctoral degrees from Nova Southeastern. Without exception, they have reported to me that they were satisfied with their degrees and with Nova's program.
