Dear friends, can anyone of you provide me with an actual overview of 100 % online / DL programs in Business Administration in South Africa, at best with no coursework (=dissertation only)? Due to all the mergers at SA universities, many formerly good information sources (like e.g. Johnnie´s DL page) are outdated, and the universities´ websites are somehow a little confusing (often, the PhD programs seem to be not included in the "postgraduate" program lists). I would especially interested in the PhD degree, maybe also in the DBA degree, since those two are rather well-known here in Europe, but not in the DBL or similar... Thank you very, very much for your help and input! Regards, Trigger
This is the guide to south african universities and technikon. You can see that which university can offer you a DBA program and contact him directly. Cheer!
Dear zvavda, thank you for this link. Unfortunately, I knew it already, and find it not really concise - besides, is it updated (regarding the whole SA merger issue)? I don´t think so, actually. If I remember correctly, there were several board members who investigated the topic of pursuing their PhD in Business at a SA university - maybe one of them has already some preliminary research results? Thanks in advance! T.
UNISA does not have a DBA or PhD in business, they offer something similar that is the D.Comm. However, this is a research only degree.
thanks, RFValve. so I can exclude UNISA of my list. I explicitly search for research only PhD or DBA degrees (not DBL or DComm or similar ones). Any other possibillities?
Someone on this board used to study DBA at The Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) but he quit. This program need some onsite seminar.
UNISA does offer a Doctor of Business Leadership degree which is equivalent to a PhD. If you do a search on this forum you will find ample information on UNISA and their DBL program.
Dear roysavia: Thank you, but I explicitly excluded this DBL degree in my original post (I just search for PhD and DBA). Dear zvavda: also rather interesting, but I don´t want any residencies. Any more suggestions? (please) T.
How about Doctor of Administration (DAdmin) at UniSA? Why you need only PhD or DBA title if the curicurum is the same?
I'd like to take a minute to correct what may be a misconception. South African universities, like many other universities formed along British lines, offer research oriented doctoral programs. Typically, there is no coursework involved. The argument has been made (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) that "If these are research-only dissertation degrees, why can't I do the research waywayway over here in the USA (or wherever) as long as I keep in touch with my dissertation advisor?" Sometimes schools have accepted this argument. Mostly they have not. Mostly they want you to be available for seminars, conferences, on a regular basis. UNISA is primarily a DL school (although there are PhD programs at UNISA that can not be completed in a 100% non-residential manner) and so that is why it's name comes up most often. That being said, my point is this. There are no "DL" doctoral programs at South African universities. Rather, there are research based, dissertation-only doctoral programs at South African universities and sometimes, if you play your cards just right, you can convince these schools to allow you to pursue these degrees over a very, very large distance. If you contact them regarding their "DL doctoral degree programs" they will likely respond in a way that will feel discouraging to you. Surf the websites, pull out the info. Read the degreeinfo archives, as much has been written about applying to South African universities. Good luck. Jack
That´s just a matter of acceptance. Europe simply does not KNOW any other degrees that PhD or DBA. In fact, the whole EU (and some more European states) have agreed on introducing the Bachelor-Master-PhD system BY 2010. Up till now, most people in business, and not many more in academics do not even know what the expression "PhD" means (but that will HOPEFULLY change), since Europeans are still used to the degree "Dr. in (subject)" (mostly in Latin). So I can say (and I work in academia), that the PhD is the only degree that will on the middle run be accepted (especially since it will be used here also NEXT to the traditional Latin one by 2010), and the DBA is partly known, especially when written down (Doctor of Business Administration; pretty close to our "old" system of "Dr. in ..."). So, just being practical, I dare to say (and I spoke to that topic with Germans, Austrians, and Slovenes two days before) that any doctoral degree being different to PhD or DBA will not help me in my personal academic or business career very much... Sad, but true (and valid for most persons in Europe). That´s the reason why... Dear Jack Tracey: yes, I am aware of that, I just used a non-correct expression. What I meant is just that I do not want any residencies and courses - in my mind, that was close to the terminus "DL", also in regard of a research based and dissertation-only-PhD (and that´s exactly what I´m searching for). Thank you for your input anyway! Regards, T.
