Newbie here looking for online or independent study courses for college credit, hopefully the cheapest that are out there. I found LSU mentioned in this forum, they were around $210 for 3 credit hour courses, other universities seem to run them at $400 or more.

    Greetings,

Of the institutions I have used, here are some of the cheap(er/ish) ones:

N.B. Cost and quality are two important, but totally unrelated factors.

Brigham Young University (BYU) http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/index.dhtm You might want to read the following thread about BYU: http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12024&highlight=byu

    LSU http://www.is.lsu.edu/

    Ohio University http://www.ohiou.edu/independent/
Since OU uses the quarter hour credit system, you wind up paying more for fewer credits (e.g., what would be a 3 s/h credit course at another college would be charged as a 4 credit course at OU, yet yield only 2.67 credits). Still, they are hardly expensive, and their year-round open enrollment makes them appealing.
WARNING: Because of their convoluted external degree policies, it is important that you make absolutely sure that you don't want to pursue a degree with OU before taking any classes from them.

    Oklahoma University http://isd.ou.edu/ulist.asp

I cannot personally vouch for the following institutions, but you may wish to consider them:

    Indiana University http://scs.indiana.edu/

    Texas State http://www.ideal.swt.edu/correspondence/

    Sam Houston State University http://www.shsu.edu/~cor_www/

Your caveat is because the credits taken may not apply to the degree ultimately chosen?

    Dear "decimon",

No, while you raise a good point, your point wasn't mine. <g> My motivation for including the Ohio University caveat my be found at http://www.ohiou.edu/adultlearning/GUIDESTART.HTM. To save your web browser a trip, I've quoted the relevant part below:
N.B. As I recall (???), even under the most favorable circumstances, the number of standardized exams they will accept is limited, and their acceptance policies (passing grade, etc.) is stricter than that recommended by CLEP/etc.

While its cheapness and higher standards (compared to the "big three", IMHO) make the Ohio University distance DEGREE worth considering, the deliberate and accidental misinformation that surrounds it, combined with its numerous rules (which seem to be primarily designed to prevent it from competing with the "traditional" OU degree), means that one needs to tread carefully if one is considering/may eventually consider an Ohio University external degree.

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek
