Does anyone know of a good accredited college that offers an online Master of Education program. I have a BS in Business and now I would like to become a teacher. I want to however get my masters and my certification. I have heard of University of Phoenix, but i'm wondering if schools would accept my teaching degree from there? I live in Dallas, Texas.

    Thank You
    Katherine

While not exactly what you are looking for, I keep getting emails about program.

  3. Try UIS

I am enrolled in the MTL program at UIS. Tuition is at the affordable resident rate if all classes online. For a 4 semester unit course, the cost is $692 including all fees. If you have a solid knowledge of computers, the course is fairly easy.

If you do not have a teaching certificate, you should probably contact your state to learn the specific requirements before you jump into a degree program. The requirements vary from state to state. You wouldn't want to waste your time and money.

    Good luck.

There are several types of MEd degree programs offered by the University of Massachusetts. Check them out at:

Please be aware that earning a Masters in Education may not qualify you for a teaching job. Some states require a student teaching internship as a part of the certification process. The laws on this vary from state to state. You'd be wise to speak to someone at the Dept. of Education in Texas to be certain as to the requirements.

    M.Ed - License

Plumbdog is correct, if you're going to teach in a public school, the license/certificate/credential from the State of Texas is critical. Some classes from the license/certificate/credential program might transfer into a master's degree program.

Now if you want to teach in a private school you might not need any state license/certificate. Again check with the appropriate state office. In many states a license is not required to teach in private schools though many private schools strongly encourage staff to get them.

Emporia State University (Kansas) offers an MS in Business Education online: Emporia State University

  7. Check with state

If you want to teach middle or high school in California, you must demonstrate subject matter competance either through a specific university training program or through examination. Because of No Child Left Behind legislation, I'm sure most states have similar requirements. When I attended CSULB for my teaching credential, a number of my classmates already had Masters in Educational Technology or something else, but they still had to complete the state approved program. University of Phoenix told me that the state does not accept some of their education programs towards the actual credential because they are not based in California. Since I already have a credential, the MTL program will advance me along the salary scale and prepare me to take the national exam.

You are in my same shoes. I just finished my BS in business (management) and I am looking at obtaining a master's in education; however, I do work for a private school. Like others said, it depends on your state's requirements. In FLorida, I had to pass a certification test and a subject area test to get certified .... a master's does not necessarily open the doors to teaching. Having said that, most states will give at least a temporary certificate to teach with a BS and a couple of tests that you may need to take. Go to your local school board.
As I said before, I am looking at obtaining a master's. SO far, I am looking at UOP (where I obtained my BS), Penn State also has a master's program, as well as Walden U. There are a ton of schools that offer such programs .... you need to see costs and schedules. UOP is flexible but pricey, and Walden is rigid as far as schedules. Penn is not a bad option but I do worry a little ... they did not seem to have answers for all my questions. They seem to be fairly inexperienced at online ed.

    I hope that helps,

    Aldo

    Re: Re: Try UIS

It is the University of Illinois, Springfield. UIS Online has an online master's program in Education: M.A. in Ed.

Tuition for the program is $140.00 a semester unit.

"UIS has implemented a special tuition rate that applies only to online courses. This rate is termed "electronic tuition," or simply "e-tuition." E-tuition is applied as follows:
    (1) All Illinois residents automatically qualify for the e-tuition rate.
    (2) An individual who is not a resident of Illinois, but who has applied and been admitted to an online degree program at UIS and who only takes online classes in a given semester, qualifies for the e-tuition rate."

If you are trying to enter a Masters of Education program with the purpose of entering the classroom and you are sans a Bachelor's in Education and a teaching certificate you are pretty well skewered! The NEA is as unforgiving as the ABA. With that being said, the University of West Alabama has a Master's in Education for those who have a certificate and a Master's in Education for those who do not have a certificate and it is stated that this will qualify you to teach in the community college system but does not provide certification. $840. per credit hour isn't bad, either. Isn't it amazing, you can teach the mental cripples that the school system produces in a community college but you can't affect real learning in the secondary system. YES! I am down on education - I have seen too much in my years of teaching in the college system.

  12. BA does not have to be in Education

If you want to teach elementary school, you need a BA in Liberal Studies. For middle or high school, you need specialize in a certain area. Check with your state to see what the requirements are for your subject area. I have a BA in History, AS in Nursing and California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science and Health. I am qualified to teach history, government, psychology, sociology and health science. Under NCLB, you must demonstrate subject matter competence either by examination or coursework. A MA in Education helps you if you are already a teacher because it moves you up on the salary scale.
