    Hello,

I'm still trying to find some first hand knowledge on the format of the NSU online MBA. I would appreciate information from anyone with knowledge of the format, workload, etc. Here are some specific questions:

    1. Testing format, proctored, online, etc.?
    2. Weekly workload, how much reading, research, writing?
    3. Does diploma say eMBA as is advertised on their website?
    4. Are you graded on your work or is it like UoP where you do class projects and get graded on those?
    5. How long to complete the program?
    6. Quality of Instruction?

I called NSU and the front line people that answer phones could not answer these questions and tried transferring me to those that could but I just got voice mail. I would appreciate any insight.

    Thanks,

    1. Testing format, proctored, online, etc.?

There is an electronic exam format that is given online for many classes that times you and grades you automatically. Not all classes offer it though. If they don’t, the professor will tell you to right your answers in Word and submit it online. Same goes with the papers, you just upload it onto the Assignment website. Most classes also require you to join one or two live chat sessions through the web so you may also need to purchase a headset with a microphone. We did a presentation with live PowerPoint slides and our microphones and it came out very well.

    2. Weekly workload, how much reading, research, writing?

Depends on the class, but there is a fair amount of writing and research. In one class, we had to read an entire textbook and write a review of another management book of our choosing. You may find this type of format in many classes. In another class, a seasoned professor told us not to read too much of the textbook but use it as a reference. In general, two to three chapters of reading per week and maybe a 4-5 page paper every week and maybe a final paper at the end. Depends on the class.

    3. Does diploma say eMBA as is advertised on their website?

I believe the diploma does have the e in it but you should double check with them as I am not sure. I only recently transferred from the regular MBA to the eMIBA program because I wasn’t able to make it to the Saturday classes.

    4. Are you graded on your work or is it like UoP where you do class projects and get graded on those?

You get graded on your work – but you can also receive a separate grade for group projects which would roll up into your final grade for the class. It is not like UoP, however, in that every class does not have a group project as far as I know.

    5. How long to complete the program?

You can do it in 18 months if you follow their curriculum and if you don’t need pre-requisites. I needed only one while my uncle needed three. Their prerequisites are Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Statistics and Finance. They offer it at the school online for 6 week stretches or you can CLEP them out. I am going to graduate later than 18 months because I would have to take three classes once or twice to reach that mark and its impossible with a full-time job, family, etc. I’m taking two at a time.

    6. Quality of Instruction?

In the graduate school, they require that all of their professors have doctorates. That to me says a lot. Many of the professors have had a lifetime of experience in their particular fields. To date, I have been extremely challenged by the work given. One professor challenged us with games to teach us to think while another loaded up a lot of assignments that made you feel as if you could drown (I got an A though).

    iquagmire,

Thanks, very good information. Disappointing to hear that the diploma says eMBA. I tried to call again today to verify this but they were closed.

What is the tuition per class? I can't find anything on their website and the package them sent me doesn't have the tuition listed.

Are you happy with your decision to attend NSU so far?

    Thanks,

I'm very happy with my decision to go to NSU - It's challenging and I am happier that I switched from the ground program to the online version as it was starting to become inconvenient for me.

As for the tuition cost, here's the letter they sent all students recently:

    Dear Huizenga School Master's Student:

The H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship would like to
wish you continued success in your studies and thank you for being part of
Nova Southeastern University. We remain committed to providing outstanding
faculty instruction, to improve our services, to enhancing program
curricula, and to increasing the amount of resources available to our
business students. To accomplish these, objectives we find it necessary to
evaluate our tuition rates annually and make adjustments as necessary.

The Board of Trustees has approved the following tuition rates for the
2004-2005 academic year. The tuition increase is effective for the Summer II
term (July 1, 2004). All rates are per credit hour, except where noted.

All weekend master's degree programs $485
    One-Year Day program $525
All online master's programs (except MACC & MTax) $535
    Online MACC & MTax $550
Prerequisite courses - master's (except MACC & MTax) $730 (per course)
Prerequisite courses - MACC & MTax $850 (per course)

Registration for the Summer II term is from May 17 - June 21, 2004 and late
registration begins June 22, 2004. If you need assistance registering or
have questions about classes, tuition, or other fees, please contact your
    Enrollment Counselor.

We are glad you are part of the Huizenga School family and we look forward
to seeing you in class next term.

    Sincerely,

    Master's Program Office

    UMUC and UCCS

Hi Ray...Give UMUC or UCCS a shot...Great schools!!!

UMUC is R/A with an initial IACBE and UCCS is R/A with an AACSB. No GMAT requirement for UMUC; however, you can take it and opt out of the AMBA 600 course if you score over a 600. You need the GMAT for UCCS; however, work experience and a high GPA from you undergrad will help.

I personally like UMUC because of their dual Masters program. Take care...

    kobeb,

Have you taken any classes with UMUC? Can you tell me anything about the format of their classes? Tests, workload, amount of reading, writing, etc.?

Both Nova and UMUC are more expensive then my Tuition Assistance and MGIB will cover so they would require a lot of out of pocket costs. I wouldn't mind paying out of pocket for an education that is known to be outstanding. However, their are cheaper options that I think beat both these programs. What do you think?

I think I just spoke to every employee at Nova Southeastern University as I was transfered all over the place. None of the people I talked to could answer all my questions so they would answer the one they could and transfer me to the next person who would answer another one then transfer me again. I did get three of them to say that the diploma does NOT say eMBA (as they call it on their website). They said it was the same diploma that the on campus students get.

    Hope this helps,

Try calling Janna Jackson, she's the Marketing Manager for the eMBA program. Her contact info is below:

    (954) 262-5048
    800-672-7223, Ext. 5048
    [email protected]

You could also try an enrollment counselor by following this link

    http://www.huizenga.nova.edu/admission/enrollment_counselors.cfm

With Nova, you must be persistent with emails and calling and trying to reach the right person as I have been bounced around many times until I figured out their system (If you do get in, let me know, I know how you could reach someone in financial aid quickly to get answers!).

Maybe I should take this as a sign....

I've been trying for over a month to get a simple question answered and have talked to no less than 20 people at NSU and none could answer my question. I've been transferred over and over again and now I'm getting the "how did you get transferred back to me again?" line. You would think they would at least know which department to transfer me too. My question is this...

Is there a separate tuition rate for active duty military for the online MBA program?

I've been told "yes, I'm sure we do" by several people but none seem to know what the rate is.

Does anyone know the answer or know who to contact at NSU to find out? I've talked with marketing managers, financial aid office, registrar’s office, admissions, billing and many more.

    Thank you,

If you've talked to all of those people and are still getting bounced around, chances are no one actually knows.

I would suggest emailing as many people as you can over there prior to enrolling if the military tuition rate is the deal breaker for you.

I've had my share of troubles with Nova's administration but you'll find that at most schools. The thing with Nova is that they are a marketing machine and are fielding more calls and students than they can handle (administratively). But once you're in, it's a cake-walk and everything goes smoothly.

If you need to talk to your counselor, though, plan on emailing a week prior, send a fax and call day and night.

Have you considered calling the dean's office. I learned that trick a while ago. Calling the office and having them transfer you to the appropriate person - The receiver sees that its coming from the dean's office and does not ignore it and picks up the phone.

Doesn't work all the time but its worth a shot.

    iquagmire,

Thanks for your continued help. I tried Janet Jackson but the only think she would commit to was that it was a "wardrobe malfunction". Oh, wrong topic.

Anyway, in two days of trying Ms. Jackson (Janna) I've only been able to get her voice mail. I have spoken too many of the other Marketing Managers and Enrollment Counselors on those lists, over the last month, and several have promised to "get back to me before the end of the day with an answer" and I've yet to hear from any of them.

You would think a question on tuition would be an easy thing to answer.

With my military tuition assistance and MGIB I'm looking at having to cover $700/month out of my pocket. I'm hoping that they offer a military tuition rate that may offset this a bit. I would really like to attend NSU for my MBA but the tuition rates are on the high side. I may have to look elsewhere if they don't have a military tuition rate.

I'll try the Dean's Office tomorrow as they are three hours ahead and already closed for the day.

    Thanks again,

Thanks iquagmire, Janna Jackson came through. I was not able to get a hold of Ms. Jackson yesterday so I sent an email to the Marketing Director last night asking for his help and I was awoken this morning by a call from Ms. Jackson with the answer to my question. $375/credit is the military tuition rate. This will really help reduce my out of pocket cost and will allow me to attend NSU for my online MBA.

    Thanks for all your help,
