Just wondering whether anyone knows how the UMUC DM program would be perceived out in the consulting or academic world. At 40k for the program, I would hope to get something out of it.

In general at least as good as a doctorate from Capella, Walden, touro, or Northcentral.

IMO, good to good+ in buisness, good- in academia. (By it self wil not get you onto the faculty of a tier 1 school, or even a tier 2, but good for tier 3 and 4).

    As they even say:
Geared for upper management validation etc. not for teaching.

The best way to look at its utility is to check what its alumni are doing with the degree. I have met a Walden graduate at NIH - one of the world's premier public health research institutions. I saw a Walden graduate at John Hopkins University faculty listing - no not adjunct-but full time. I have met a Walden graduate on the full time faculty at National Defense University, Washington, DC. At the end of the day, what you do with a degree depends more on you rather than the institution. The only issue with a DM is it is not considered a research doctorate. That does not mean the work is less than any other doctorate but generally the focus. It is an applied degree which may or may not mean anything to some institutions. I have seen many Capella graduates on fine institutions faculty across the country. Touro and North Central are too new to track their alumni for the purpose of comparison with other institutions

If I recall correctly, it's not a DL program.

I think it can be done DL as well with very minimal residency requirements.

UMUC is a brick and mortar institution that wouldn't raise any eye brows, I don't think anyone from academia or industry would look down at UMUC. However, two issues. the Doctor of Management is not a common degree since the PhD and DBA are the nomal academic qualifications in business world so it could be an issue when applying for faculty positions. The other issue is the price, you will have to add all the trips for the program so the total can go as high as 60K+ for a doctoral degree. UMUC is a good school, but I don't know if the price can be justified if you are going to land a faculty position for 60K. Argosy, TUI and even Walden are a lot cheaper. I don't know if the price can be justified in this case. If you want a cheaper B&M option and have an engineering degree, you could look at the PhD in Indutrial Engineering at Colorado State that is a lot cheaper and it does not require mandatory residences.
