This is to solve a discussion that we never found an answer. A co-worker of mine is considering an MS in Human Resource Mgt. I brught up the fact that Ft. Hayes State University has a concentration in Organizational Leadership. Org Leadership seems to have alot to do with HR but less directly focused. We never actually came to a conclusion.

We were discussing which was of more utility or what the differences would be. Can anyone help us with our dilemma?

    Depends on the career path.

If the person is in HR and plans to stay in HR the HR specific degree might be more useful.

If the person is in general management and wants to go into HR the HR degree might be more useful.

If the person is not in HR or wants to get of HR and go into general management then the Organization degree might be more useful.

If the person wants to go into academia and eventually get a PhD in HR then the HR degree...

... see the trend, what does the person want the degree for?

    HR vs OL

I agree with Mike, it all depends on what your co-worker wants to do with the degree. If he/she plans on using it to get into HR or HRD, a masters in HRM is preferable. There is a lot of foundation knowledge that you have to know to work in HR - benefits, compensation, labor laws, worker's comp etc.

Troy State offers an MS in HRM. I'm not recommending TSU, I'm just using it as an example: Troy State - MS in HRM

HR analysts I've worked with have at least a bachelors in HR and many have their masters' degree.

If the person is looking more at Org Leadership, I'd recommend an MBA program instead of an OL program. MBA programs have a higher level of recognition.
