From the southwest Florida Herald Tribune:
Interesting article-- I don't quite know what to think.

    Bravo!!!

On the one hand, the FCAT test seems like a good way of ensuring that minimum academic standards are being met before students are allowed to graduate from Florida's public high schools. However, it may be failing a lot of students who can make it in life, as well as in college, even though they failed the FCAT test. With that in mind, Kudos to the students who are obtaining high school diplomas by switching to private high schools. :D

    Re: Bravo!!!

Two things: (1) it is important that the issued high school diploma really indicate a level of accomplishment comparable to a high school graduate from a public (FL) school. So there's a matter of state oversight to be addressed. (2) I would expect that many students who have trouble with the standard path to HS graduation in Florida will have problems as college students. (Undiagnosed dyslexia, stuff like that...) FL ought to keep in mind that its state colleges should be alerted that some students coming in this way will need mentoring, or other academic services. It would be good to be ready with prompt help for them.

The low academic achievers should start off in community colleges where they can take remedial courses in math and English. That's how I did it.

I barely made it through high school. Frankly, it's a miracle that I even graduated. I took the minimum number of credits and took the easiest classes that I could find. I never studied (the idea was foreign to me) and I had a lot of mental and emotional issues that had to be dealt with, due to the death of a father and a resulting dysfunctional family with a step father, yadda yadda yadda. In fact, I didn't go to the community college until I had been out of high school for about three years -- and then I began taking remedial courses in the cc. Those remedial courses aren't all that bad. :D

Anyways, these low academic achievers in high school would be best suited in the remedial courses that are offered in the community colleges. The entry-level tests will determine if they need these remedial courses. It would be unwise for them to start their academic endeavors at the state university.

I applaud that private school for recognizing a potentially broad market and capatilizing on it before the state changes the requirements.
