Hello, I have been looking at American Military U for a second master's program, they have some extremely interesting degree programs (civil war history and English for one). I know they have applied for regional accrediation and have been accepted as a candidate. I am wary of the acceptance of DETC credits as I do plan to continue on to a doctoral program, although I have heard very good things about AMU. I have also heard that once a school is given candidacy to NCA, they are almost always accepted. Any thoughts? Thanks!
AIC They are not RA but accredited. Almost went there but found, well took the advice of some educators here that RA was a better route. I do hear good things about them, the do proctor exams. I see you are in Northern Virgina. You can take a walk around yourself at AMU if you want. The school is located in Charles Town, West Virginia. Also has an offshoot under American Public University System. APUS. Go to C Town on Route 340 downtown. The HQ is located about 2 blocks north of the court house. Enjoy
Thanks Thank you, but I wasn't asking if they were RA, I was asking when and if they might become RA. Either way, thanks for the tip on location, that is a 3 hour trip from here, but I read they have an office in manassas, so maybe i'll check that out.
This is a tricky one, and until AMU gets RA status, there's no real cut-and-dry answer. Anecdotally, however, when I seriously considered doing a Master's (either Land Warfare or Intel) from AMU a few years ago, with an eye toward continuing on to a doctorate, I was put in touch with some AMU alumni that had gotten admittance to doc programs. I had also sent out emails to different PhD history programs, to see if they would consider an applicant with an AMU master's degree. I honestly don't remember now who all I sent these to (but I'm sure of two -- Duke and Univ. of Alabama), but I do remember that their response was they would not turn away my application because of the AMU degree. If you have a particular school(s) in mind for the Ph.D., you might want to contact those directly, and ask them for their view.
