    Hello,

Looking for a Ph.D Program in Psychology

I think I am disenrolling myself from Capella. I am now looking into NorthCental University in Arizona.

I found out that NCU is 100% online and will still be able to complete the program in approximately 3 years.

Capella has been helpful but when I asked to switch to another degree, it seemed like they were giving me every reason why I shoudn't.

Please, please, respond to this...I need to make my final decision on choosing a program soon. Well, I at least need to drop out from Capella if I should by next week.

    Thanks,
    JB

I had my reservations about NCU, but based on what I've read here from students, I'm confident that they've tightened-up their requirements.

Given a choice of the two, I'd have to go with NCU at this point. Capella is a solid school, but their tution is based on the quarter system. That means you're charged the same amount if you take one course or five courses a quarter. Not a problem if you're able to be a full-time student, but I could handle one, maybe two courses at a time. No way could I afford that.

    Thanks.

Just want to make sure NCU is not a degree mill as I almost signed up for Madison U sometime last year. My courses were evaluated and everything and all I had to do was send them my money. If it wasn't for this forum, I would have been guilty of having a fake degree.

    jeepnbeep,

Northcentral University in Arizona is definately not a degree mill. There were concerns in the past about the quality of their programs but I've been very impressed with the feedback from current NCU students that post on this forum.

I've got a long ways to go finishing my undergrad and then a MBA but when I do finish I'll give NCU a serious look for my Ph.D (Provide my wife has not pulled the plug on my education funding).

    I stand corrected.

I have only looked into their Human Services Ph.D. program. I did ask them if it was possible to pay on a per-credit or per-course basis, and was turned down cold.

    JB,

Who at Capella is giving you these reasons not to switch? Folks in University Services, the School of Human Services, or School of Psychology? I can see SHS folks doing this -- they'd want you to stay in their program, but I can't imagine those in the School of Psych doing it -- perhaps I'm wrong.

I'm curious, because I switched schools effortlessly. I contacted the School of Business, and they asked me to formally apply (instead of a transfer from the School of Education). I did this, was accepted, and University Services took care of the rest with no fuss (and no, I didn't have to pay the app fee again).

    Regards,
    Adrienne

    Hello Jeep,

I am currently attending NCU. I to was skeptical about the school. The regional accredidation was what helped me "take a chance." I am glad that I did. I find that MOST classes are rigorous. I am not sure if this helps you - but I am comparing rigor to my both of my Master's - one from Syracuse University and another from Cornell. Moreoever, I have found that ALL the mentors (professors) are very knowledgable and helpful. All-in-all, I have been happy in their psych dept.

The one caveat is that if you are looking for state licensure, their program will NOT prepare you for this. I am planning on "respecializing" at Fielding when I am done.

    Bruce:
The doctoral program in Human Services uses the quarter system, along with Business and Education.
But the author of this thread was looking for a doctoral program in psychology only. Capella's *psychology* program does NOT use the quarter system. I know because I'm in the psy program myself and I am only charged by the course.
Its the only program at Capella that does not use the quarter system. The others do.

If you want to, you can check the
tuition requirements for psychology courses at:

    http://www.capella.edu/reborn/html/schools/psychology/tuition.aspx

The other doctoral programs clearly specify the that they use the quarter system:

Email Dr. Bruce Weiss at Capella

    Beep...

If you are having problems changing schools, send a note to Dr. Bruce Weiss to tell him what has happened to you and the problems you are getting. He is a very nice person. I would be surprised if you could not get it resolved at that level. He is the Executive Director over the School of Psychology at Capella.

Before you apply to NCU try this first. Don't give up yet.

Here is Dr. Weiss' email: [email protected]

    Best regards!

I think she is the enrollment coordinator. She was the first person that I talked to before I even considered either programs. I am not naming names because I don't want to get her in trouble. She is really nice and very knowledgeable. And yes, she is very prompt in returning calls and emails.

At the end, it almost seemed like she was selling me something and that's what turned me off.

    Hi BlackBird,

The lady said she would change my program but that she wanted me to "really really" think about it because she has known people that regretted switching to the Psychology Field. I just decided to go somewhere else after finding other programs that are cheaper than Capella.

I am now considering NCU because it is much cheaper and it's 100% online. Another program was Regent(s) University which is APA approved...but again, I am not really going for the licensure.

Again, thank you for your suggestion. I don't think she meant any harm and I really don't want to get her in trouble.

I would echo BlackBird's advice -- contact Dr. Weiss directly about this. It's important to speak with an academic in the School about concerns such as these. The enrollment counsellor is just doing her job, which is selling you on the benefits of a Capella degree (I'm glad she's being nice about it!). However, she won't truly be able to give you advice concerning degree program suitability with your career goals, etc. You need someone in the School for that.

Again, I agree -- contact Dr. Weiss before you make a decision to pull out from Capella.

    Regards,
    Adrienne
