The following has recently been added to Warnborough's front page:

Warnborough University is incorporated in the Republic of Ireland as a global university. It is not a UK institution and does not confer UK awards.

Looks like Trading Standards are flexing their muscles.

    Cheers,

    George

Unless they wer eincorporated some time ago they should not be using the word "university" in their business name. (at least in Eire).

They had changed from "University" to "College" a few years ago. Looks like they changed back. But they still seem to be claiming their degree-granting authority by virtue of their Irish charter (in which they give themselves the power to grant degrees).

Now, Dr. Bear, how dare you discuss such an issue! Warnborough consider you a 'self- proclaimed expert' and you therefore have no qualifications to comment on the topic! :p

    Cheers,

    George

Too bad Bear isn't just a self-proclaimed expert but the real thing.
Who could be better suited than a self-proclaimed expert to vet a self-proclaimed university?

    Warnborough going straight??

Well, not really but they have discovered another con....

This is Brenden Tempest-Mogg writing to his 'learning centres' around the globe, I quote:

"The good news is that we had the British Accreditation Council meeting here on Friday and we are now a candidate for accreditation with the BAC for Warnborough College. This body is recognised by the UK government. They will inspect us on 26th June...so if we get BAC we are ok.

ALSO, we will be meeting with the ISO9001:2000 team on Friday for their accreditation status which is under the UKAS - United Kingdom Accreditation Services. This is recognised in the UK and globally. They are aiming for us to submit in August/September. this will be for WC and for WU.

    Cheers,

    Brenden"

BAC stands for the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education and is a voluntary, non-governmantal private scheme for accreditation of colleges etc who, according to their web site, http://www.thecapability.uk.com/bac/index.html exist

    • to provide independent guidance to students seeking to undertake further or higher education in an institution outside the state sector

    • to provide assurance of the good standing of an institution to government departments and other interested bodies

    • to enable an institution to state publicly that it has voluntarily accepted independent inspection and has satisfied BAC that all relevant aspects of its operation are maintained at a satisfactory level.

BAC accreditation is for an institution, not for the courses. There is not much chance of WC (that looks like a perfect name for it) meeting any of the above or the actual inspection criteria, which covers:

    • Premises and Health and Safety

    • Administration and Staffing

    • Management of Quality

    • Student Welfare

    • Teaching and Learning: Delivery and Resources

Their premises consist of a building best described as a large semi-detached house rather than a college or campus; they do not employ any permanent full-time academic staff or subject specialists; whilst they may have a documented QA system, it has not been implemented anywhere regardless of their claims and fake evidence obtained from their overseas friends and trusted learning centres; the same applies to their management structures.

Neither does BAC confer any degree awarding powers or validate courses.

So, down WC goes that one for Warnborough!

What happened to the Australian 'home-grown' accreditation agency, the International Accreditation and Recognition Council (IARC) anyway?

As to ISO9001:2000, , I asked UKAS http://www.ukas.com/ and they told me that:

"Please note that the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) does not accredit colleges and universities - you need to be in touch with the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). their website is: http://www.ucas.co.uk"

Incidently, UCAS doesn't accredit anybody either, which just about describes Warnborough's efforts perferctly.

Can't wait to see what they'll try next??

    Warnborough College is still around:

    http://www.warnborough.ac.uk/

Apparently it's now operating as a British further education college of some kind, and doesn't offer degrees.

Does anyone know what is requied in order to legally operate a private FE college in the UK? They obviously don't need degree granting authority, but do they need some kind of government license? Is there some kind of mandatory formal oversight of these schools?

Simultaneously, Warnborough University remains busy offering apparently stateless university degrees from Canterbury England on the basis of an Irish business registration, with the disclaimer George noted:

I liked them best when they had an Oxford address and were calling themselves Warnborough College, Oxford. Now that sounds classy.

Bill Dayson: "I liked them best when they had an Oxford address and were calling themselves Warnborough College, Oxford. Now that sounds classy."

Self-Proclaimed Expert: It also gave them the opportunity to issue what I say in my book is the most cleverly misleading text I've ever seen from a school. An example, based on the fact that their rented build had once been used by Oxford University:

"Like Oxford itself, Warnborough College is steeped in tradition. The college’s historic campus sits on Boars Hill, with an imposing view overlooking Oxford’s dreaming spires. It is here on Warnborough’s terraced lawns that some of this century’s great innovators have conceived great thoughts. Mahatma Gandhi, Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, Gilbert Murray, and many others, have all walked the halls, and found a place of inspiration amongst Warnborough’s 13-acre woodland campus. Far from being weighed down by its tradition, Warnborough College’s history is a source of momentum for all who become part of it. Warnborough is committed to creating world leaders in all walks of life. No other college can offer such a combination of historical depth and academic excellence. Whether you are graduating from high school, undergraduate college, or university student, a mature age student, or wishing to obtain first graduate qualification, Warnborough College Oxford will launch you into a successful, satisfying future."
