Is it possible to take CLEPs and other exams in high school and then apply them to a degree after HS graduation?
Yes. CLEP scores have a very long shelf life (most are indefinite I think), and there isn't a minimum age that I can remember. You will need some type of government-issued ID card (driver's license, passport, etc.).
So happy to hear that My son will be a H.S. sophmore next year and plans to take the CLEP math test after he finishes Algebra II. He also would like to take the French CLEP after completing his 3rd year of French. Do you think he will be ready? His H.S. is highly academic and I see the CLEP as more valuable that AP courses.
Sympatheticear I am sure he is really for College Mathematics as well as College Algebra. There is no differences between Algebra II and College Algebra. For French, it depends on his ability..... I took 4 years of Japanese in High School, and got straight "A's" but when took Defense Language, I couldn't figure out. It is cool that he takes some of CLEP while in High School, I didn't know about CLEP until I joined the Military. I rather take CLEP than AP exams 'cause those teachers in High School...They don't know what they are teaching for students to prepare for AP exams.
Thank you! My son is starting HS; my daughter now in college commented that it would have been easier to take CLEPs right after her HS classes, rather than waiting until college - while she still had the material fresh. However their HS says it's not allowed. I don't see what business it is of the HS, if we're not using it for any HS purpose. So I'm not planning to tell them.
CLEPS and High School Hello, I would leave the high school guidance department out of the loop. Just go to your local CC and get an application. Photo ID is a must. Hille
I plan on doing the same with my son after he finishes his junior year. However, my son is interested in applying to his school choice(s) college honors programs, which usually replace the first two years of college requirements with more "in depth" course work, which would mean that taking the CLEP's would be a waste of time. Does it really make a difference if he gets into an honors program or not (he plans on majoring in Mathematics/Comp. Sci) in the long run? Thanks
Dr. Gina, I don't think it is a waste of time on CLEP. Just check the school that your son wants to go for the major. And check with their curriculums as well as CLEP. CLEP on Calculus is not easy, English Composition w/ Essay, Technical Writing (DANTES), and etc. Those exams, I am sure it does apply to advanced curriculums.
The RA bricks and mortar that I'm attending (Coastal Carolina Univ., A SC public) does not accept CLEP general exams and grants no credit for DANTES exams. Make sure that you can use the exam you're about to take at the school you want to attend. I've taken many CLEP and DANTES exams and expect that any advanced high school student can pass the English Comps and Math with minimal preparation. That Soc Sci/History will require some preparation for sure. Good luck....
