Ok, so I'm thinkin of joining the big bad world of DL and excelsior is looking pretty good right now, but I've got some questions:

    1) What is it going to actually say on the piece of paper they award me? Bachelor of Arts? Bachelor of Liberal Studies? Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies?

    2) If one were to use the vast array of courses available through the dictance learn (registered trade mark) thingy, do you actually have to register at seventy different universities in order to get all your credits? Please tell me it's not this complicated.

    3) I'm thinking to use this to do a grad degree in education, but not neccesarily in the US. Anybody know the international applicability of the degree?

    Thanks a lot!:)

read this thread regarding diploma wording
    http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13437&highlight=excelsior+diploma

if you're taking distance courses at 70 different colleges, then you have to register at each school and have your credits transferred to Excelsior

that is not as difficult as it sounds

I registered for ths course online in 5 minutes

    http://explore.berkeley.edu/UCExt/courseview.asp?secid=449&value=related&action=Internet

and this course by a one page fax

registering procedure depends on the school

    1) Mine says Bachelor of Science. My transcript has "liberal arts" in the concentration block.

    2) You do not have to register for some schools, such as U of Missouri, BYU, and a couple others who are used to DL (and have courses instead of degrees) Generally, the registration you must do does not require transcripts and too much paperwork.

    3) not sure, but you probably will have little difficulty. I've heard some Euro countries don't like schools like Excesior. I've gotten into U of Oklahoma, as well as Troy State. I was told via e-mail that I could get into The Open University (UK) to do a PhD if I wanted to (and paid, instead of crossing my fingers and hoping for free tuition like many Brits)

    Quick drive-by if I may:

    WHAT'S ON THE DIPLOMA?
with respect to Excelsior degrees earned in the School of Liberal Arts and the citation on diplomas and in transcripts -

Excelsior now awards degrees in the Liberal Arts with named majors (since 1 Jan 2003). The number of available majors is not exhaustive, but a fair number nevertheless.

    1. The major is noted on the degree diploma

    2. The named major is noted in the student's transcript

For example, the BS degree offered by the Excelsior College School of Liberal Arts, with major in Physics would be styled a Bachelor of Science in Physics.

The are many "areas of focus", or "areas of study" the do not enjoy major status, and I think this so in the case of a recent post where the Excelsior graduate, class of 2004, described *his* degree diploma and transcript in terms of the "old nomenclature". His degree was, as I recall, in an applied/professional Business type subject and, as I read it, could never qualify for major status (majors in Business – see School of Business for requirements).

Degrees in the liberal arts enjoying declared majors include:

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Mathematics, and many more.

Note that there is no material change in degree requirements, now and then, for degrees with major that were once degrees with concentration.

Degrees administered by other Excelsior College schools - Business, Technology, Nursing - have always been conferred with named major.

    CURRENCY OF EXCELSIOR DEGREES ABROAD
With respect to acceptance by foreign (and indeed U.S.) graduate schools and programs, I have never experienced any problem. Research for "Accelerated Master Degrees by Distance Learning", included application to and formal enrollment/participation in, a significant number of graduate degree programs, in disparate disciplines, offered by institutions in three continents. I was accepted into every program to which I applied.
